How Samsung is beating Apple in China

GUANGZHOU, China/SEOUL ? Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook believes that ?over the arc of time? China is a huge opportunity for his pathbreaking company. But time looks to be on the side of rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. which has been around far longer and penetrated much deeper into the world?s most populous country.

Apple Inc this week said its revenue in Greater China, which also includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, slumped 43 per cent to $4.65 billion from the previous quarter. That was also 14 per cent lower from the year-ago quarter. Sales were weighed down by a sharp drop in revenues from Hong Kong. ?It?s not totally clear why that occurred,? Cook said on a conference call with analysts.?

Neither is it totally clear what Apple?s strategy is to deal with Samsung ? not to mention a host of smaller, nimbler Chinese challengers.?

Today, in the war for what both sides acknowledge is the 21st century?s most important market, Samsung is whipping its American rival. The South Korean giant now has a 19 per cent share of the $80 billion smartphone market in China, a market expected to surge to $117 billion by 2017, according to International Data Corp (IDC). That?s 10 percentage points ahead of Apple, which has fallen to 5th in terms of China market share.

Cook said Apple planned to double the number of its retail stores over the next two years ? it currently has eight flagship stores in China and three in Hong Kong. But, he added, Apple will invest in distribution ?very cautiously because we want to do it with great quality?.

Samsung, with a longer history in China, now has three times the number of retail stores as Apple, and has been more aggressive in courting consumers and creating partnerships with phone operators. It also appears to be in better position, over an arc of time, to fend off the growing assault of homegrown competitors such as Lenovo Group Ltd, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp, former company executives, analysts and industry sources say.

Apple declined requests for comment for this article.

?? ?

Varied models ?

?

Samsung?s history and corporate culture could hardly be more different than Apple?s, the iconic Silicon Valley start-up founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976. Lee Byung-Chull started Samsung in 1938 as a noodle and sugar maker. It grew over the decades into an industrial powerhouse, or chaebol as Koreans call the family owned conglomerates that dominate the nation?s economy and are run with military-like discipline.

Apple, by contrast, became the epitome of Californian cool, an image the company revels in. That hip image translates in China ? its stores are routinely packed ? but hasn?t been enough to overcome the more entrenched Samsung.?

A stuffy electronics bazaar in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen illustrates part of the reason why.?

Samsung Galaxys and Apple iPhones of different generations sit side by side, glinting under bright display lights as vendors call out to get customers? attention. With its varied models, Samsung smartphones outnumber iPhones at least four to one.

While Apple releases only one smartphone a year, priced at the premium end of the market, Samsung brings out multiple models annually with different specifications and at different price points in China.

And those models, analysts say, are loaded with features tailored specifically for the local market: apps such POCO.cn,? the most popular photo sharing site in China, or the two slots for SIM cards (Apple offers one), which allows service from multiple cell carriers, either at home or abroad.

?The Chinese just love features. They want their phone to have 50 different things that they?re never going to use,? said Michael Clendenin, managing director of technology consultancy RedTech Advisers. ?Apple just doesn?t play that game. Unfortunately, if you want to hit the mainstream market in China, and you want a lot of market share percentage points, you have to offer the Swiss army knife of cellphones.?

?? ?

?Setting the pace?

?

Analysts believe Samsung?s increasing strength in China is a critical reason behind its rival?s possible intention to introduce globally a new and cheaper iPhone model, as well as one with bigger screens ? a staple of Samsung?s offerings.

Said a Samsung executive with experience in China: ?We definitely think we?re setting the pace there. They are having to respond to us.?

Most audaciously, Samsung has gone after Apple not simply by offering lower priced smartphones, but by attacking its rival directly in the pricier end of the market. ?We put a lot of emphasis on the high end market in China,? co-CEO JK Shin told Reuters in an interview.

Samsung launched a China-only luxury smartphone together with China Telecom marketed by actor Jackie Chan that retails for about 12,000 yuan ($2,000). The flip phone, named ?heart to the world,? is encased in a slim black and rose gold metal body. The sleek look ? called ?da qi? (elegantly grand) ? is coveted by Chinese when they shop for cars, sofas or phones.

?There are a lot of ?VVIP?s? in China, and for them we launched luxury phones promoted by Jackie Chan. This helps target niche customers and build brand equity,? said Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung?s mobile business.

While Samsung won?t sell millions of these smartphones, the creation of the phone in conjunction with a carrier reinforces Samsung?s willingness to go local ? and tap into niche markets.

?The key point is that Samsung consistently adapts to the local market,? said TZ Wong, a Singapore-based technology analyst with IDC.

Apple?s latest mobile operating system offers links to popular Chinese applications like Sina?s microblogging platform Weibo, but the application itself must be downloaded onto the phone. On all of Samsung?s entries, it?s already there.

?People know intellectually that Samsung is from Korea, but when it comes to the messaging there is always a local face,? Wong said.

?? ?

Retail presence

?

Samsung opened its first office in China in 1985 in Beijing ? an era in which it was all but inconceivable that Apple and Samsung would end up in one of the world?s most intense corporate grudge matches. Like other South Korean chaebols, Samsung was a first mover in China, using the market primarily as a base to produce electronics for the world.

In contrast, Apple?s big push in China came only recently, with the advent of the smartphone age roughly five years ago.

The early entry gave Samsung an undeniable edge, and it adapted fast to a rapidly changing environment. By the mid-1990s, with the economy booming, Samsung made the strategic decision to treat the Chinese market not just as a production base, but to start marketing to China higher-priced electronics, said Nomura researcher Choi Chang-hee, who wrote a history of Samsung?s experience in China.

That shift has meant Samsung?s retail presence in China far outstrips Apple?s. Aside from selling via the distribution outlets of the three major telecom carriers, Samsung also has a strong retail presence.?

It got it through its partners Gome Electrical Appliances and Suning Commerce Group, as well as its own ?Experience? stores and small retailers all over the country.?

Apple works through the same channels, but its relatively late entry means it has a significantly smaller presence. Samsung, for example, has more than 200 official distributors and resellers in Guangzhou province, while Apple lists 95.?

Over the last two decades, Samsung has also taken pains to build relationships with Chinese government officials and ? perhaps more critically ? the three major telecom carriers.

The notion of the importance of connections ? or ?guanxi? ? in China is occasionally overrated in business. Not, according to Samsung?s Shin, in this case. ?It?s our core policy to keep friendly relationships with the operators,? he said. In China,? each carrier uses a different technology and that requires Samsung ?to tweak our smartphones to their request.??

?It?s not easy? but we do this to be more operator friendly,? Shin said.

Contrast that with the ongoing negotiations Apple has had with China Mobile, the largest cellphone operator. For years the two sides have been unable to come to an agreement on revenue sharing, effectively precluding Apple from hundreds of millions of potential customers. ?

?? ?

Scrutiny from the top

?

Samsung?s reach extends higher than just the CEOs of the top state-owned telecom companies. Top executives have met each of the last several Chinese leaders, most recently Xi Jinping, who spent time in April with vice chairman Jay Y. Lee, son of K.H. Lee, Samsung Electronics chairman.

?What surprised me most? was that they [Chinese leadership] know very well about Samsung. They even have a group studying us?, Lee said.

The Chinese government has also made clear it?s well aware of Apple ? though not always in a good way. In April, state media bashed Apple for its ?arrogance,? protesting among other things that its current 1-year service warranty was insufficient. Apple initially dismissed those criticisms, but Cook later apologised to Chinese consumers.

Samsung?s success in China has it roots, one former executive said, in a previous obsession for the company: its desire not to replicate the mistakes made by Japanese rivals.

?Samsung spent a lot of time benchmarking Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic,? said Mark Newman, who spent six years in Samsung?s global strategy group and is now an industry analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein in Hong Kong.?

?One of the things that came out of that is the realisation that the insular approach has its drawbacks, and so Samsung has made an effort over the last 10 years to be much more global.?

This strategy of decentralisation is plainly evident in China, he said, home now to more Samsung employees than any country outside South Korea.?

?? ?

Fighting high?

and low

?

Samsung now leads in both low-end and high-end segments in China, according to IDC, and its logic of going after both ends of the market is straightforward. In China, where the average wage is roughly $640 per month, many users looking to upgrade from feature phones to smartphones cannot afford Apple.

By bracketing the market with multiple models, Samsung can breed deep relationships with customers, many of whom, market research shows, trade up to more expensive models as they get older. Playing high and low also positions Samsung to fend off the intensifying competition from Chinese firms such as Lenovo and Huawei and literally hundreds of smaller local players.

?That?s where the next battle for Samsung will be fought,? said Newman. ?We?ll have to see if Apple does introduce a new, cheaper model for China ? and the world.?

Heavy rains cause flash flooding in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? A series of thunderstorms moving across western North Carolina has triggered major flash flooding, inundating roads, apartments and parts of several counties.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1buP7OY ) that Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright is telling residents to stay indoors and away from flooded roads and washed-out bridges.

No injuries have been reported.

Parts of Catawba and surrounding counties were under water Saturday. Catawba County officials say some of the worst flash flooding in decades followed a nearly stationary weather system that dumped more than 12 inches of rain.

Several miles of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County was closed for a short time Saturday due to high water.

It is at least the fourth major flash flooding event in the Charlotte region in the past month.

Bloody clashes as military moves to break up pro-Mursi rallies in Egypt

?

By Alex Lantier
27 July 2013

Deadly clashes erupted across Egypt yesterday, as tens of thousands protested in dozens of marches supporting either deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi or the military that ousted him in a July 3 coup.

Security forces moved Friday night to break up the pro-Mursi rallies, firing live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters. The move came after Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim?installed by the army?vowed that the coup regime would disperse the protests organized by Mursi?s Muslim Brotherhood (MB) ?soon and in a legal manner.?

By the early hours of Saturday morning, medical personnel reported that at least 17 people had been killed and over 500 wounded in clashes with police near the October 6 Bridge in Cairo?s Nasr City, where one of the largest pro-Mursi protests has been ongoing.

At least seven people were killed and 80 or more wounded when pro-army and pro-Mursi demonstrators clashed in Alexandria. MB officials claimed the security forces opened fire with birdshot on pro-Mursi demonstrators in Alexandria. Among the dead was a 14-year-old boy who was stabbed to death.

Hundreds of others were wounded in clashes in the port city of Damietta, the Shubra neighborhood of Cairo and other areas across Egypt.

There were widespread fears of a bloody nationwide crackdown, after the army issued Mursi?s Muslim Brotherhood an ultimatum to join negotiations with the new military junta by today. On Thursday, July 3 coup leader General Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi told the MB that the next 48 hours were a ?final chance? to ?join the nation in preparation to launch the future.?

The army had also posted a statement on its Facebook page, threatening to fire on anyone it deemed violent. It said that it would not ?turn its guns against the people, but it will turn them against black violence and terrorism which has no religion or nation.? Hundreds of protesters, mostly MB supporters, have been killed at demonstrations since the coup.

Tanks and armored personnel carriers ringed Cairo?s Tahrir Square Friday. Top police and security officials appeared on the square during the day, to chants of ?The army, the police, and people are one hand.? At night, hundreds of thousands of people massed on Tahrir Square and surrounding streets, supporting Mursi?s overthrow.

There were large pro-Mursi rallies in the Sinai, in Matrouh, and at Cairo?s Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque. It appears that pro-Mursi rallies are still heavily outnumbered by anti-Mursi protests.

Tensions were further heightened by the announcement that the army was bringing charges against Mursi, whom the army has imprisoned in an undisclosed location since the July 3 coup. The charges stem from a prison escape by Mursi and other MB detainees during the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. Mursi had said in a TV interview that ?unknown men? freed him and other MB members from Wadi Natroun prison.

The Egyptian courts, a bastion of support for Mubarak, allege that Mursi conspired with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to attack Egyptian police stations and jails. This allegedly involved ?setting fire to one prison and enabling inmates to flee, including himself, as well as premeditated killing of officers, soldiers, and prisoners.?

MB spokesman Gehad El-Haddad dismissed the charges, saying that with them the Mubarak regime was ?signaling ?we?re back in full force.??

The increasingly pro-authoritarian tone of the anti-Mursi protests reflects the crisis of leadership in the working class, and the counterrevolutionary role of the bourgeois and middle-class forces that make up Egypt?s liberal and pseudo-left parties.

Terrified by the mass strikes and working-class mobilizations of the spring and after the June 30 appeal for protests, fearing a revolution against the entire political establishment, they shifted sharply to the right. Tamarod?a coalition involving liberal forces such as the National Salvation Front NSF), the Free Egyptians party, and the April 6 Youth Movement, and supported by the pseudo-left Revolutionary Socialists (RS)? backed the military coup. This paved the way for the formation of a military junta to try to wind down mass opposition.

While the initial target of army repression is the MB, ultimately the army and its supporters will turn on opposition in the working class to their reactionary social agenda?which includes deep cuts in critical subsidies for food and energy, upon which Egyptian workers depend.

Tamarod and its allies hailed the army?s call for protests and have sought to shift the political atmosphere in Egypt as far to the right as possible. Tamarod and the NSF issued statements endorsing al-Sisi?s call for pro-army protests and giving the army its full backing in a ?war on terrorism.?

The April 6 Youth Movement did not endorse the army?s call for protests, but signaled it would support military repression. It issued a statement saying that the armed forces ?do not need popular delegation to perform its patriotic duties of preserving security and resisting violence.?

In a cynical maneuver, the pseudo-left Revolutionary Socialists (RS), which hailed the coup as a ?second revolution,? declined to endorse the army protests. They wrote, ?Whatever crimes the Brotherhood has committed against the people and against the Copts in defense of its power in the name of religion, we do not give army chief El-Sisi our authority. We will not go into the streets on Friday offering a blank check to commit massacres.?

This statement reflects the RS? concerns that their support for the coup leaves them politically exposed, not their opposition to massacres by the military. (See also: Egypt?s Revolutionary Socialists seek to cover up support for military coup) In fact, leading RS members openly said yesterday that they would support a military intervention.

On her Twitter feed, RS member Gigi Ibrahim, the partner of RS blogger Hossam el-Hamalawy, angrily demanded that the army intervene in the protests. ?Five were killed in Alex[andria] and [neither] the army nor the police intervened, while the squares around Egypt are calling for Sisi?s mandate to end violence,? she wrote. ?Why are the army and police that everyone is cheering now not stopping or intervening in the bloodshed??

More fundamentally, the RS? position reflects that organization?s long-standing alignment with US foreign policy. Like Washington, they are signaling their essential support for the coup, while trying to prevent the outbreak of too much bloodshed between the army and the MB. Such bloodshed would make it difficult for Washington to effect a reconciliation between the military and the MB and stabilize the Egyptian state, one of its key props in the Middle East.

Anonymous US diplomatic officials told Al Ahram, ?the main US aim is for the Brotherhood to be reintegrated into the political life of Egypt and that there must be no persecution of the group.?

Yesterday, US Secretary of State John Kerry reportedly spoke at length with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi, endorsing the coup. While stating that Washington wanted Egypt to resume a ?democratic path,? Kerry assured Fahmi that any delay in US economic or military aid to the Egyptian regime due to the coup would be ?temporary.?

The administration has made clear that it will not declare the military?s overthrow of Mursi a coup, which would require by law a cutoff of aid. And, while Washington has temporarily held up the shipment of four new F-16 fighter jets to Cairo, the Pentagon is going ahead as planned with joint military exercises with the Egyptian military.

WILL KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY'S ANTI-GUN RESOLUTION CURB CRIME?!?

Make no mistake, Kansas City Mayor Sly is an elected official who is "anti-gun" by word and deed and regardless of his political spin.

In fact . . .

Mayor Sly might be the first Kansas City politico to come out and openly work for a gun crackdown within city limits. Former Mayor Funky joined "Mayors Against Guns" but the move was largely ceremonial and didn't involve him actively pursing any real legislation or a promise to establish "gun courts" to more swiftly address crime involving firearms.

Now . . . The Council Adopted Mayor Sly's resolution to divest from gun companies. . .

"Mayor Sly James told the council that the goal is discussions with firearms companies on letting cities with gun violence problems enact more restrictive gun control laws within their jurisdictions."

Fox4 on the impact . . . "The resolution is just a suggestion and carries no force of law."

And so, here's an open question . . .

WILL MAYOR SLY'S DECIDEDLY ANTI-GUN STANCE RESULT IN FEWER KANSAS CITY HOMICIDES?!?!?

2nd Amendment enthusiasts argue against the strategy but Mayor Sly seems dedicated to pursing a new crusade against guns and gun manufacturers.

Police detain Spain train crash driver as suspect

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? Spanish police on Friday detained the driver of a train that crashed in northwestern Spain, lowered the death toll from 80 to 78 and took possession of the "black boxes" of the train expected to shed light on why it was going faster than the speed limit on the curve where it derailed.

The driver, Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, was officially detained in the hospital where he was recovering, said Jaime Iglesias, the National Police chief of the Galicia region where the crash happened just on the outskirts of the regional capital, Santiago de Compostela.

Iglesias said that Garzon Amo would be questioned "as a suspect for a crime linked to the cause of the accident."

The driver, under guard by police, cannot yet testify because of his medical condition, Iglesias said, adding that he did not have details of the medical condition but that it could delay efforts by police to question him.

The revised death toll from 80 to 78 came as forensic scientists matched body parts with each other at a makeshift morgue set up in a sports arena in Santiago de Compostela, said Antonio de Amo, the police chief in charge of the scientific service for Spain's National Police.

De Amo said police are still working to identify what they believe are the remains of six people, and that the count could change as they continue their work associating body parts with each other.

Investigators, meanwhile, have taken possession of the "black boxes" of the train that hurtled at high-speed along a curve and derailed, court spokeswoman Maria Pardo Rios. The boxes record train's trip data, including speed and distances and braking and are similar to flight recorders for airplanes.

Analysis will be performed on the boxes but she declined comment on how long the analysis will take.

Apple leads an early advance in technology stocks

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple is leading an early advance in technology stocks on Wall Street after beating analysts' estimates for earnings and revenue.

Apple jumped 5 percent to $438 in the first few minutes of trading Wednesday. Apple shipped more iPhones in the latest quarter and said it was planning to introduce new products in the fall.

Eli Lilly, Ford and Boeing also rose after reporting profits that were better than investors were expecting.

Outside of technology stocks, the gains in the broader market were muted.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 17 points, or 0.1 percent, to 15,585. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up three points, 0.2 percent, at 1,695.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite rose more. The Nasdaq was up 22 points, or 0.6 percent, at 3,600.

China growth, jobs picture darkens as activity gauge hits 11-month low

By Langi Chiang and Jonathan Standing

BEIJING (Reuters) - Activity in China's vast manufacturing sector slowed to an 11-month low in July as new orders faltered and the job market weakened, a preliminary survey showed on Wednesday, suggesting the world's second-largest economy is still losing momentum.

The flash HSBC/Markit Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 47.7 from June's final reading of 48.2, a third straight month below the watershed 50 line which divides expansion from contraction and the weakest level since August 2012.

The employment sub-index slid to 47.3 in July, the weakest since March 2009, the depths of the global financial crisis and has been below 50 for four months in a row.

"The lower reading of the July HSBC Flash China Manufacturing PMI suggests a continuous slowdown in manufacturing sectors thanks to weaker new orders and faster destocking," said Hongbin Qu, chief China economist of HSBC.

"This adds more pressure on the labor market," he said.

China's economy grew 7.5 percent in April-June from a year earlier, the ninth quarter of slowdown in the past 10 quarters.

Since taking office in March, China's new leadership has said it is prepared to tolerate lower growth and eschew stimulus in order to push a restructuring of the economy to wean it off a dependence on exports for growth and towards consumption.

But while top leaders have stressed in recent weeks that reform is the priority, the latest being President Xi Jinping, they were also at pains to assure investors that Beijing would not allow the economy to slip too far.

On Wednesday the industry ministry said it was putting a priority on restructuring and reforming traditional industries such as steel, shipbuilding, cement and aluminium, once drivers of growth but now plagued with overcapacity.

UNEMPLOYMENT CONCERN

Even as reform slows growth, economists in the latest Reuters poll predicted China's economy would grow 7.5 percent in 2013, hitting the government's target.

But other analysts noted that China is still reliant on healthy global markets.

The PMI's new orders sub-index fell to its lowest level in 11 months, and stayed below 50 for a third straight month. Output declined to 10-month low and remained in contraction for a second month.

"China cannot change its weak economic growth situation due to still weak external demand and over-capacity problems in domestic market," said Wang Jian, a senior researcher with the China Society of Macroeconomics, a research body affiliated with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

"China's economic growth rate will probably fall below 7 percent in the fourth quarter this year and the growth may fell under 6 percent in some quarter next year," Wang wrote in the China Securities Journal on Wednesday.

The government has begun fine-tuning policy in response to the slowdown. Last week it scrapped the floor on bank lending rates to help lower financial costs for companies.

The next area of concern could be unemployment, which the government fears because of the potential for social unrest.

Economists say the new leadership in Beijing believes annual growth of 7 percent is needed to create enough jobs to maintain social stability, although the top leaders have never specified a figure.

"The slowdown in the manufacturing sector is having a bigger impact on employment," said Jerry Hu, an economist at Shanghai Securities. "The employment problem could get more severe if the service sector slows.

The service sector, which took over manufacturing as the biggest economic sector in 2007, is also the biggest employer, providing 36 percent of the country's jobs compared with 30 percent in factories.

Leaders will be banking on the sector continuing to grow to take up the slack in manufacturing jobs.

The HSBC/Markit Flash PMI is published about a week before the final reading, and is based on approximately 85-90 percent of total PMI survey responses each month. It is the earliest available indicator of monthly activity in the Chinese economy.

Senate set to finish work on student loan deal

(AP) ? Lower interest rates on all student loans are in sight.

The Senate was set to take up a bill Wednesday that would link interest rates to the financial markets, providing lower rates for all college students this fall but perhaps prescribing higher rates in the years ahead. Critics, including liberal Democrats and student groups, call the White House-backed proposal a bait-and-switch measure that would cost future students.

"Rates on every single new college loan will come down this school year, offering relief to nearly 11 million borrowers," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Tuesday as he urged lawmakers to vote on the provision that the White House estimates would save the average undergraduate $1,500 in interest charges.

The measure would cost future students, however, if the economy improves as expected and interest rates climb.

Interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans doubled to 6.8 percent on July 1 because lawmakers could not agree on a way to keep rates at 3.4 percent. A bipartisan compromise emerged that would overhaul the entire federal loan system before students start signing their loan agreements for fall classes.

Under the deal, undergraduates this fall could borrow at a 3.9 percent interest rate. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent, and parents would be able to borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would climb as the economy improves and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.

The compromise could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus in the spring, if congressional estimates prove correct.

As part of the compromise, Democrats won a protection for students that capped rates at a maximum 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent, and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

Using Congressional Budget Office estimates, rates would not reach those limits in the next 10 years.

The bipartisan compromise negotiated in the Senate closely hews to what House Republicans passed earlier this year ? a sticking point for some liberals.

"At a time when Democrats control the White House and the U.S. Senate, we should not support bad legislation almost identical to that passed by a very conservative, Republican-led House," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats.

Most Senate Republicans who pushed for interest rates to be linked to the financial markets were likely to vote for the measure, which was negotiated by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and GOP Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the top Republican on the Senate education panel.

Democrats, who control the chamber, have been the most vocal critics. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island pushed for an extension of the current 3.4 percent rate so lawmakers could address the subject this fall during the revision of the Higher Education Act. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has objected to students paying higher interest rates than the Federal Reserve offers to big banks.

"I understand that compromise isn't always pretty, but there isn't any compromise in this bill," Warren said last week when the deal was announced.

"In fact, I think the whole system stinks," she added during a speech on the Senate floor.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., planned to introduce an amendment that would redirect any profits made through the bill to help low-income students.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill as written would reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade.

Elite Online University Startup Minerva Finds Quicker Path to Accreditation

Pending approval, the ambitious online education startup Minerva Project has found a way to get university accreditation through a relationship with Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) in Southern California, which will allow it to matriculate its first class in the fall of 2015. The alternative would have been to wait until Minerva had graduated its first class, in 2019.

Approximately 400,000 of the jumpers with model number 90564 were sold between May 2010 and May 2013, about 8,500 of which were sold at major retailers in Canada such as Sears, Walmart and Toys R Us.

They have a blue fabric support seat attached to a large white metal frame adorned with brightly coloured toys.

Consumers are advised to stop using the seat and contact manufacturer Kids II? for a replacement.

(AP) ? A beaming Prince William and his wife, Kate, emerged from a London hospital on Tuesday with their newborn baby boy, presenting the world with a first glimpse of the prince who is third in line to the British throne.

The royal couple, both 31, looked happy and relaxed as they waved at the crowds of journalists and onlookers gathered outside London's St. Mary's Hospital, posing for photographs and joking with reporters.

Kate, wearing a baby blue polka dot Jenny Packham dress, smiled and waved as she stepped out from the hospital doors with the future monarch in her arms.

"It's very emotional. It's such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like," she told journalists.

Kate then gave the baby to her husband, who, cradling their child, said: "He's got her looks, thankfully. He's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure."

William added: "He's a big boy. He's quite heavy," and laughed when a reporter asked him about the baby's hair.

"He's got way more than me, thank God," he said.

The couple also revealed that William has had a go at changing the infant's first diaper. "He's very good at it," Kate said.

The new parents drew whoops and excited applause from well-wishers as they revealed the newest member of Britain's royal family. William said they're still trying to decide what to name the little prince.

The couple re-entered the hospital to place the child in a car seat before re-emerging to get into an SUV. William drove them away ? palace officials said they will head to an apartment in Kensington Palace and spend the night there.

The young family's first public appearance together has been the moment that the world's media and crowds of onlookers camped outside the hospital had long been waiting for, and the photographs snapped Tuesday are likely to be reprinted for decades as the baby grows into adulthood and his role as a future king.

The appearance recalls a similar one three decades ago, when Princess Diana and Prince Charles carried a newborn William out to pose for photographs on the same steps in 1982.

Katie Allan, 26, was elated to witness the 2013 edition. "William gave us a wave as they drove away so it was perfect. Days like this really bring the country together," she said.

Earlier, William's father, Charles, and his wife, Camilla, as well as Michael and Carole Middleton ? Kate's parents ? visited the young family at the hospital.

Charles called the baby "marvelous," while a beaming Carole Middleton described the infant as "absolutely beautiful."

It was not immediately clear when Queen Elizabeth II would meet the newborn heir.

The couple's Kensington Palace office said Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to the 8 pound, 6 ounce (3.8 kilogram) baby boy at 4:24 p.m. Monday.

The news was greeted with shrieks of joy and applause by hundreds of Britons and tourists gathered outside the hospital's private Lindo Wing and Buckingham Palace.

Revelers staged impromptu parties at both locations, and large crowds crushed against the palace gates to try to catch a glimpse ? and a photograph ? of the golden easel placed there to formally announce the birth.

Hundreds were still lining up outside the palace gates Tuesday to get near the ornate easel.

In London, gun salutes were fired, celebratory lights came on, and bells chimed at Westminster Abbey, where William and Kate wed in a lavish ceremony that drew millions of television viewers worldwide.

Halfway around the world, royalist group Monarchy New Zealand said it had organized a national light show, with 40 buildings across the islands lit up in blue to commemorate the royal birth, including Sky Tower in Auckland, the airport in Christchurch, and Larnach Castle in the South Island city of Dunedin.

A similar lighting ceremony took place in Canada; Peace Tower and Parliament buildings in the capital, Ottawa, were bathed in blue light, as was CN Tower in Toronto.

The baby is just a day old ? and may not be named for days or even weeks ? but he already has a building dedicated to him.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said an enclosure at Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo would be named after the prince as part of a gift from Australia. The government would donate 10,000 Australian dollars ($9,300) on the young prince's behalf toward a research project at the zoo to save the endangered bilby, a rabbit-like marsupial whose numbers are dwindling in the wild.

British media joined in the celebration, with many newspapers printing souvenir editions.

"It's a Boy!" was splashed across many front pages, while Britain's top-selling The Sun newspaper temporarily changed its name to "The Son" in honor of the tiny monarch-in-waiting.

The birth is the latest driver of a surge in popularity for Britain's monarchy, whose members have evolved, over several decades of social and technological change, from distant figures to characters in a well-loved national soap opera.

"I think this baby is hugely significant for the future of the monarchy," said Kate's biographer, Claudia Joseph.

For some, though, it was all a bit much.

"It's a baby, nothing else," said Tom Ashton, a 42-year-old exterminator on his way to work. "It's not going to mean anything to my life."

Best budget and expense tracking apps for iPhone: Spendee, Mint, BUDGT, and more!

Best income and expense tracking apps for iPhone: Spendee, Mint, BUDGT, and more!

The best income and expense tracking apps to help you manage your expenses, improve your financial position, and keep more cash in your wallet!

Budgeting and expense tracking might not sound sexy, but it's what lets us afford all the truly sexy things we love, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. From bill payments to expense claims, budgeting for vacations and holidays, financial planning is all about making the most of what we make, and that's where apps can help!

The App Store is full of apps to help you manage your personal finances straight from your iPhone. Some apps just help track expenses, others can completely monitor your accounts and help get you back on track. Here's a broad selection of of my current favorites, the best personal money management apps the iPhone has to offer!

BUDGT

BUDGT for iPhone doesn't require you to give it any personal account information or login information, so it's simple to start and even simpler to keep using. Enter how much income you have or enter the amount of money you'd like to budget, it doesn't have to be all of it. Then start adding daily and monthly expenses.

If you don't like giving finance apps access to your sensitive banking information and just want to be able to better figure out where you stand, BUDGT is a great option. Of course, that also means BUDGT will work best for people who have a pretty good handle on their financial situation already.

Mint

If you want fine-tuned control over all your personal finance accounts in one app, Mint is a great option. You can link bank accounts and credit cards, and from there Mint will simply pull everything into one place to give you an overview of what 's coming in compared to what's going out. Mint lets you set up budgets in-app for different categories, and since Mint monitors your bank and credit accounts, it can notify you when you're nearing a limit.

As long as you're okay with giving a service access to your personal accounts, Mint the best choice for people that really need help staying on track with budgeting, with very little upkeep needed.

Check (formerly Pageonce)

Check, formerly known as Pageonce, is very similar to Mint in terms of functionality and feature set, but caters to a different kind of person. While Check imports a lot of the same information as Mint, it presents it in a different way and has more detailed options such as adding investments and checking and monitoring credit scores. Most of these additional features require a monthly subscriptions, but may well be worth it if you have a lot to manage.

If you are only concerned with budgeting your money and doing simple financial tasks, Mint or another app would be a better choice. If you're more concerned with monitoring credit or investments, Check is the best option available.

Spendee

Spendee is a brand new income and expense tracking app and, not only does it have a great interface, but it's ridiculously easy to use. Adding income and expenses can be done in very few steps, which makes entering things on a regular basis painless. Activities show up in a main feed so you can easily and quickly scroll through everything you've added. Likewise, the overview section gives you graphs you can scrub through to see where your money is coming from and where it's going. Underneath that you'll also see a breakdown on what you spend the most money on.

Because Spendee requires no personal information be given to set up and start using it, and it has an excellent and easy to use interface, it's the best choice for anyone new to personal finance apps, and anyone who wants to get started, and keep at it, with as little effort as possible.

Dollarbird

Dollarbird has a great interface, several really useful features, with lightning-quick system for expense and income entry. There's no personal information required in order to start using Dollarbird, no accounts to create or banking information required. The thing that makes Dollarbird unique is that it uses a calendar view as a grid system for tracking your balances. That means, at a glance, you can easily see on what days you spent the most money, and where your balance sits at any given time. Underneath the calendaryoul have a quick view of expenses for a particular day. Pulling down will launch the income and expense entry section. There are tons of categories to choose from and you can add your own whenever you want.

Dollarbird is a great option for people want quick and easy data entry and detailed financial information, and don't want or have the need to link personal accounts. If the calendar grid makes sense to you, Dollarbird will make sense to you.

Next

Next is the simplest version of an expense tracking app you're going to find. It doesn't track income at all, only expenses. Next works by giving you a block of pre-selected icons. Tap on one and create an expense for it. You can change the date in the calendar at the top by scrolling sideways. You can move the individual expense blocks around or change them into something else. Any category that currently has expenses associated with it will appear blue. Darker blue categories are the ones you spend more money on each month, while lighter colored blocks indicate less money spent. Swiping from side to side gives you breakdowns of what you're spending and where.

If you don't need to track your income and only want to see where your money is actually going, give Next a try.

Your picks?

We are aware that personal finances are just that, personal. Everyone has different needs and wants when it comes to managing their money. Let us know in the comments what apps you're using to budget, save, and track your income and expenses. How does it work for you and have you seen good results?

Whitney Bank sells Houston branches to credit union

Chris Curry

Randy Gartz, Houston market president for Whitney Bank.

A Houston-area credit union has agreed to buy seven of eight branches that Whitney Bank had planned to close, according to statements from both financial institutions.

Lake Jackson-based Texas Dow Employees Credit Union said in a statement Monday it?s slated to rake in about $34 million in loans and about $30 million in deposits when it acquires the Whitney branches from the New Orleans-based bank?s parent company, Hancock Holding Co. (Nasdaq: HBHC).

Gulfport, Miss.-based Hancock in May announced plans to shutter eight of its 14 branches in Houston by the end of the year, and overall the $19 billion-asset bank company aimed to close about 40 branches across its footprint in the southeastern U.S.

The deal for the branches is expected to close by the end of the year.

Whitney Bank was the 22nd-largest bank in Houston last year with about $730 million in local deposits, according to Charlottesville, Va.-based SNL Financial LC. Meanwhile, the $2 billion-asset TDECU is the largest credit union in the region, according to the HBJ?s annual list of the largest credit unions in Houston.

Review: The Leisure Society - News - Eastern Daily Press

Saturday, July 20, 2013
11:14 AM

An audience of thousands sat in the July sun as country-tinged pop band The Leisure Society opened Latitude Festival?s main stage yesterday.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Gentle flute and violin strings supported two-part harmonies, with frontman Nick Hemming enjoying cheeky exchanges with the Obelisk Arena crowd.

He swore as he said how ?amazing? it was to be at Henham Park, as the mercury reached for the thirties. ?But that?s no reason to swear Nick,? quipped back a band-mate. ?This is Latitude, not Reading Festival.?

And the Burton on Trent-formed six-piece captured the atmosphere of the weekend as they worked through a set of uplifting tunes.

There was no craning to see over the tall person in front, as families staked out a good spot to sit and sip cold drinks. And the civilised approach to the British festival experience was echoed in the music.

With two Ivor Novello nominations to their name, musicianship was accomplished and choruses were soaring.

A ukulele was brought out mid-set, as a love song was dedicated to a festival-goer.

And Hemming?s song-writing shone through as tempos changed, electric guitar complemented woody flute and people were drawn in. Their bright, mature sound set the perfect tone for the rest of the weekend.

Satanists Protest Westboro Baptist Church by Making Founder's Mother "Gay"

Setting up a lemonade stand for peace is one way to protest the Westboro Baptist Church.

Holding a rally in which gay couples kiss over the grave of the founder's mother is another.

And that's exactly what went down on July 14 when the Satanic Temple - an organization that looks to foster "benevolence and empathy" among all individuals - took members to the very cemetery in which Catherine Idalette Johnston is buried.

She's the parent of WBC founder Fred Phelps Jr.

Leaning over her grave, members of the same-sex then smooched each other on the lips.

"Upon completion of the pink mass ceremony, Catherine Johnston is now gay in the afterlife," reads the Satanic Temple website, triumphantly.

"Fred Phelps is obligated to believe that his mother is now gay."

"If beliefs are inviolable rights, nobody has the right to challenge our right to believe that Fred Phelps believes that his mother is now gay."

Moreover, at one point, Temple spokesman Lucien Greaves placed his exposed penis on Johnston headstone.

The temple has asked same-sex couples around the globe to follow its leads; visit the grave; and perform their own pink masses in order to send the WBC a message.

They may have had it coming. Earlier this week, that church expressed joy over Cory Monteith's death and said it hopes Lea Michele kills herself.
