One of the most interesting categories at the Glasgow Restaurant Awards is the Greenest Restaurant prize. The shortlist for the award comprises the recently opened Cup Tea Lounge, Urban Bar and Brasserie plus the newly refurbished Bonne?Auberge.
The idea of a green restaurant is a relatively new but it is an increasingly important one. We asked Ian Gulland of Zero Waste Scotland, sponsors of the award, to explain why restaurants need to up their green?game.
Reduce?waste
According to Mr Gulland, ?An estimated 53,500 tonnes of food waste is disposed of annually by the Scottish hospitality sector, two thirds of which could have been eaten. By reducing this waste and increasing recycling, restaurants in Glasgow could become more resource efficient and save money, as well as complying with new recycling regulations which will come into force next?year.
?As such, we?re delighted to be supporting the Greenest Restaurant Award, which will showcase businesses which are already leading the way in reducing their waste and managing the value of all?resources.?
Among other criteria, the panel of mystery judges were looking for restaurants that could provide evidence of measures to reduce food and associated packaging waste; efforts to minimise the use of energy and water and partnerships with other businesses in the supply chain to help reduce?waste.
Bottom?line
While reducing waste helps the environment, it also makes sound economic sense for both restaurant owners and customers. Restaurants which cut waste and save money can maintain prices. As one of the mystery judges out it, ?Glasgow?s restaurants are behind the Glasgow Tourism Sustainability Project and those taking it seriously are seeing the net benefits that being green has upon their bottom line. Lots of effort is being made to be more sustainable because it makes complete fiscal sense, as well as doing our bit for the?environment.
One of the finalists, Paul Reynolds, proprietor of Cup Tea Lounge,?said:

Sustainability and environmental issues should be at the top of agenda for every commercial business and it is fantastic that the awards are helping raise awareness of this within Glasgow?s restaurant?industry.

From small things like encouraging our customers to take everything home, to investing in state-of-the-art equipment in our premises. This will remain an important part of Cup?s business model as we continue to?grow.?
Urban?bees
In day to day operations, this means policies such as using low voltage light sources and biodegradable packaging as well as efficient stock management to reduce waste. Alan Tomkins, proprietor of Urban Bar & Brasserie, also practises efficient stock control to minimise waste. At Urban Brasserie, sustainable sourcing is another key part of their green strategy. For example, the business is involved in the Urban Bees project, where honey is sourced from Glasgow?s bee?population.
?As a business we are very conscious of the role we play in the environment and are constantly looking at improving our business model in relation to environmental issues,? said Mr Tomkins. ?We are thrilled to be in the final three for the Glasgow Restaurant Awards? Greenest Restaurant of the?Year.?
The winners of all the categories will be announced at the Glasgow Restaurant Awards Ceremony at the Citz Theatre on?Monday.
CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez will travel to Brazil for a regional summit at the end of this week despite cancer-related medical treatment in Cuba, Brazil's ambassador said on Monday.
If confirmed, the 58-year-old Chavez's presence at the Mercosur trade bloc meeting would indicate his latest health scare is not as bad as some are speculating.
Venezuelan officials would not immediately confirm the ambassador's statement. Chavez was in Cuba on Monday and it was unknown if he would return home first if he should decide to go on to Brazil.
Having won re-election in October for a new six-year term, Chavez has made scant appearances since then and not been seen in public since November 15.
Last week, he left for Cuba, saying in a letter he was to receive "hyperbaric oxygenation" - a treatment used to alleviate bone decay caused by radiation therapy. The president has undergone three cancer operations in Cuba since mid-2011.
So while officials are playing his latest treatment down as a secondary follow-up to successful removal of two cancerous tumors he has had in the pelvic area, media is awash with rumors that his condition could be much graver.
"His presence is confirmed, that's what I understand," Brazil's ambassador in Venezuela, Jose Antonio Marcondes de Carvalho, told Reuters when asked if Chavez would be at the Mercosur meeting.
Chavez's unusual silence and invisibility has extended to his normally humming Twitter account where he has posted no new messages since November 1.
Venezuela's widely traded bonds have been rallying on the renewed speculation over the socialist leader's health, reflecting Wall Street's appetite for a more business-friendly government in Caracas.

Anything that?s new is automatically, at least on some levels, pretty exciting; especially when it comes to relationships. That?s because in the beginning months, you?re still getting to know the person, which means that you?re never really 100 percent sure what to expect. Add that to the dating routine and, even if it?s a place that you have been to before, it?s still a thrill because you?re going to the movies or dinner and dancing with the person who you are still getting to know.
Yet, as time goes by and familiarity begins to set in, although the love may be more solidified, there still tends to be the potential of falling into a bit of a rut. Still court one another. When the relationship first started out, you couldn?t wait to see one another and the way that you did that was plan dates. Just because you?ve been together several years, that doesn?t need to stop. When you make a point to plan some time, outside of the house, to spend with one another, it reminds both of you that dating is still just as much of a priority as it once was.
Be spontaneous. A man never gets tired of receiving an ?I can?t wait until you get home tonight? email or text. A woman always looks forward to receiving flowers at work for absolutely no reason other than ?just because I love you?. Each week, make it a point to do something out of the blue that lets your partner know that they are still just as desirable as the day of your first kiss.
Plan a vacation. Those with?marriage and family counseling degrees?will probably tell you that one key to keeping romance alive is to make sure to switch up the scenery from time to time. You can do this by planning a getaway. Whether it?s to a bed and breakfast that?s 30 minutes away or a trip overseas, try and make that (at least) an annual priority. Nothing says ?that old loving feeling? like a fabulous hotel room in another city or town.
Create your own traditions. Most couples make it a point to celebrate their anniversary; but, it?s also special to commemorate other special moments in your relationship such as your first date or the first time you said ?I love you? to one another. In other words, don?t wait until that one day in the year to make a big deal out of your union. The day you that got married is just one of them.
Get a fantasy journal. No matter how long you?ve been with someone or how old you get, you will always have fantasies. So, why not get a private journal that you and your partner can write your own secret desires in that can be shared between the two of you? It?s a subtle way to get to know one another?s deepest thoughts and a gentle nudge towards making some of those dreams a reality.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? The New York Yankees say Alex Rodriguez will have surgery on his left hip and will miss the start of the season and possibly the entire first half.
Rodriguez has a torn labrum, bone impingement and a cyst, the team said Monday. The Yankees said he will need to follow a pre-surgery program over the next four-to-six weeks and the team anticipates he will be sidelined four-to-six months. That timetable projects to a return between the start of May and mid-July.
A-Rod had right hip surgery on March 9, 2009, and returned that May 8. The Yankees said this operation will be "similar but not identical."
People with a snoring problem probably have tried various products to put a stop to their snoring. Thus, you will be able to breathe through your nose and stop snoring because you won?t have to breathe through your mouth. Don?t worry because these chin straps won?t cause any discomfort while you sleep.
Did you know that bad sleeping posture is the main reason why the jaw and the tongue are aligned wrongly and the nasal passages are blocked? If you can find the right posture to lie in bed as you sleep, you will greatly reduce the case of snoring. There are now special pillows formulated to encourage the proper sleeping posture. If you sleep on your side, you need to elevate your head; this will cut the issue of poor jaw and tongue alignment as they offer support to the neck. Other pillows are placed behind your back or between your thighs to keep you from rolling over to your back or tummy.
It is also possible to have medical devices prescribed, but only when those other suggestions don?t work. You would require the guidance of a doctor if you are to resort to this treatment method. The doctor can choose to prescribe the sue of the continuous positive airway pressure mask or CPAP if you have a severe snoring problem.

?On the left is what I did last week in the morning, very early in the morning... I went to the dermatologist and on the right I'll explain in a minute.
#1. I hadn't been to the skin doc in a while. Skin cancer runs in my family, so I like to get that stuff checked-the-check out! I go with no traces of make-up at all, so my face and all it's freckles can get way-too-closely-looked at.
#2. This is what the girl said to put on! That is a piece of paper...ha ha ha ha But I stripped down to my undies and put my paper "robe gown" on. Mmmmm nice and not-soft and crinkly.
?#3. I read this while I waited, always, what seems like a half an hour til' the doctors finally come into your lil' "holding room": ?It was a poster about whiteheads and blackheads. If you didn't know, whiteheads are when when the skin is covering the lil' ugly-thang, and a blackhead is when the skin is open and you can see it stretching the poor, lil' pore out with it's grossness! Yuck!
#4. Then I read the entire "Understanding Skin Cancer" poster...and sort of started to freak myself out!
#5. Then the doc came in....and I am still old school, I get super embarrassed and tried to pretend I wasn't as I got a thorough "skin examination"...of my WHOLE body, by the doc and the nurse....I was like, "just hurry so I can wrap myseld back up in this giant piece of paper you gave me to wear!"
AND HOORAYYYYY....the my worry over the "suspicisious spots" are just benign tumors (AKA non-cancerous).
#6. He was like, "WHAT DID YOU DOOOOOOO?!?" when he saw my curling iron burns, which are like brand new scars! ha ha ha He confirmed that the one on my neck might get darker- "oh cool, now it will really look like a hickey on my neck".
#7. Then I was excited to leave there and called everyone that was worried to say, "hooray, we were all worried for nothing!" I went to Target to go look around, to celebrate!
#8. Then I came home, and made a tutorial putting some make-up on! ha ha ha ha (see picture at top..hee hee)

(December 3, 2012) Autism Speaks and Delivering Scientific Innovation for Autism, LLC (DELSIA), its non-profit affiliate, announced today a partnership between DELSIA and Seaside Therapeutics (Cambridge, Mass.) that aims to discover biomarkers that can be used to facilitate the development of safe, effective and personalized treatments of autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
DELSIA's partnership with Seaside will direct funding allocated by Autism Speaks to an innovative program aimed at identifying genetic and protein biomarkers that can be used to identify patients most likely to benefit from treatment with arbaclofen (STX209). Under the terms of the agreement, DELSIA will provide $2 million in funding to support the biomarkers discovery program at Seaside Therapeutics.
"Autism Speaks is extremely pleased to be funding DELSIA's first award of $2 million to Seaside Therapeutics, a company that has shown a long-standing commitment to developing treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder," stated Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., chair of DELSIA's Board of Managers and chief science officer of Autism Speaks. The partnership with Seaside represents the inaugural award for Autism Speaks' newly established venture philanthropy affiliate DELSIA.
