Taylor Swift Talks Love & Marriage! Harry Styles, Listen Up ...

Taylor Swift Parade Magazine Photoshoot

Taylor Swift may sing about love and finding the one, but that doesn?t mean she?s ready for the fairytale ending to her Love Story just yet!

Swifty recently did an interview with Parade, where she opened up a little bit more about her love life ? including marriage and kids!

While she?s not getting ready to waltz down that aisle anytime soon, when does she see herself settling down?

Taylor revealed:

?People think I want to get married really young?I don?t know why. I?m a romantic person, but that doesn?t mean I want to miss out on being in my young 20s.?

We think that?s a good plan, Taylor!

As for her experiences with true love?

Despite her lyrics, Mz. Swift confessed:

?I tend to think things are love and then look back and reevaluate. I know how many people I?ve said ?I love you? to. I could probably count it up, but I don?t feel like it. If I end up getting married and having kids, that?s when I?ll know it?s real?because it lasted.?

We mean, we really think some Haylor babies would be SUPER adorbs, but not just yet?! LOLz!

Taylor is currently being linked to One Direction?s Harry Styles and as we previously mentioned, is even looking to buy a house in his neighborhood!

The record-breaking crooners seem to be really into each other ? who knows what their rumored relationship may lead to!

Online personal training startup Wello packs a punch with $1 million ...

Wello

Some impressive investors including Mayo Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Mohr Davidow and Aberdare Ventures have thrown $1 million in seed money behind an ambitious Rock Health fitness startup by the name of Wello.

The startup has created an online marketplace that connects physical trainers with clients and enables live, online personal training via video chat.

The seed round, which also saw contributions from Morado Ventures, S-Cubed Capital, PhilQuo Ventures and angel investors, will propel the startup as it readies to launch a new offering early next year.

Right now, Wello facilitates personalized, one-on-one training sessions between consumers and more than 150 certified physical trainers. The next step is to launch fitness classes led by those trainers so that users can do joint sessions with family or friends in different places, or join a structured class with others who are interested in the same activity and are available at the same time. That would bring down the cost of a session, co-founder Leslie Silverglide noted, which ranges from $35 to $199 per hour depending on the trainer.

For consumers, the value proposition is obvious: more motivation to work out and help from someone who knows what they?re doing, without having to leave home. The site lets users search for trainers based on style and specialty. For trainers, Wello provides an additional revenue stream and the potential to fill typically unbooked hours during the day with appointments. Trainers are screened by the company?s on-staff personal trainer and must take a class on how to train through video.

Wello takes a part of the per-session payment, but not nearly as much as the up-to-80 percent that gyms take from trainers? fees, Silverglide said. That enables trainers to charge less for a session.

Silverglide and co-founder Ann Scott Plante met as business students at Stanford University and started working on the site at the beginning of 2011. They launched it in a private beta mode in March of this year and publicly in July.

They won?t say just how many people are using the site, but they will say that those that use it tend to return. ?Two-thirds of people that try a session once will come on and try it again,? Plante said, adding that some customers have already done up to 50 sessions in the four months the site has been live.

As far as competition goes, the closest thing to Wello appears to be HealthFleet Inc., a Connecticut e-coaching startup for weight loss. But Wello is probably tapping into the same pool of people who would use services or mobile tools that track and personalize health recommendations like FitKit, Healthrageous and Enforcer eCoaching.

Although the founders are spending their time in Rock Health?s incubator program developing and preparing to launch the new features next year, they aren?t planning on stopping there. ?Ultimately we hope to connect people with experts in nutrition, sports therapy, etc.,? Silverglide said.

Warriors hold off Nuggets 106-105 in wild finish

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? If there were ever a time to praise the benefits of replay, Warriors coach Mark Jackson found it.

Andre Iguodala's 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded was waived off, and Golden State held on for a wild 106-105 win over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night after four replay reviews over the final 3.4 seconds.

Iguodala received a cross-court inbounds pass and connected from the left wing with a hand in his face, and Denver players celebrated by running off the court toward their locker room. But the Warriors stayed put and waited on yet another review by officials at the scorer's table ? then began their own cheers at raucous Oracle Arena when officials ruled the shot came just an instant after time expired.

"I was very confident that it didn't count," Jackson said. "That being said, I didn't know what the results were going to be, the same way with some of the other calls. Mistakes are going to be made ? by players, by coaches, by referees. At the end of the day I'm just thankful we're at a time where we review it. Great camera work. Shout out to the camera man."

Iguodala missed the last of three free throws that would have tied the game with 3.4 seconds to go, but Denver still had two more chances to win.

Officials first went to the replay table to review whether Jarrett Jack had fouled Iguodala in the act of shooting to give him three tries when trailing by three. After he clunked the third attempt off the back of the rim, Golden State's Draymond Green knocked the ball out of bounds to give the Nuggets another possession with 2.1 seconds left ? and that play also went to review.

Andre Miller's pass was deflected out of bounds, and officials went to the replay again before ruling the ball went off a Golden State player. Iguodala swished a 3 that would have won the game, but it came too late.

"If I put a stopwatch on ... it seems like the clock started early for me," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "There's nothing to argue about. The camera says it's in his hands."

Jack scored on a driving layup with 1:12 remaining, moments after a critical turnover that could have cost Golden State.

"We were pretty confident on a lot of the calls that didn't go our way throughout the course of the game, so we really weren't sure," Jack said. "Happy that one was able to go in our favor, but it shouldn't have come down to that. We had a couple mistakes, errors down the stretch that we'll definitely try to clean up in practice."

David Lee hit a layup with 2:12 left on the way to a season-high 31 points on 13-of-15 shooting for the Warriors, who earned a hard-fought first win of the season against the Nuggets in the third meeting between the teams in a 20-day span.

Klay Thompson scored 21 points and Stephen Curry had 20 points and a season-best 10 assists as Golden State (9-6) won for the fourth time in five games and moved three games above .500 for the first time since it was 7-4 early in the 2010-11 season. The Warriors also have nine wins in their first 16 games for the first time since 2006-07.

Iguodala finished with 22 points, Danilo Gallinari added 20 points and nine rebounds and Ty Lawson 17 points and nine assists for the Nuggets, who escaped with a double-overtime victory here Nov. 10 before beating Golden State at home last Friday.

The Nuggets used a 13-6 spurt early in the third quarter to build a 16-point lead, which looked an awful lot like the 15-0 run by Denver to start the second half of the last matchup. This time, Gallinari scored five of those points but the Warriors fought back.

"It seems as if we're developing a little bit of a rivalry with them ? two out of the three games have been dogfight games," Jack said. "It was almost like an old-school East Coast basketball game, punch after punch after punch. Luckily we got to have the last one tonight."

Iguodala was held to 8 for 17 from the floor after he went off for a season-best 29 points in the last meeting ? the most points by an opponent against Golden State this season.

This win came at a good time for Golden State following a dramatic two days in which the Warriors and Andrew Bogut acknowledged the center underwent a more extensive microfracture surgery in April. Both sides are still unclear when the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick will be ready to return on his surgically repaired left ankle that has limited him to four games.

He said before the game he is done predicting when he might be back on the court, while general manager Bob Myers publicly apologized Thursday night to anyone who might have questioned how the situation was handled. He insisted the team didn't intend to mislead anyone by describing the procedure as only to clean out loose particles and bone spurs.

Golden State hit seven of its first nine shots to jump to a 17-5 lead 5 minutes into the game.

Jordan Hamilton hit a 25-footer with 4:21 left in the first half for Denver's first lead on the way to a 60-51 edge at the break after the Nuggets shot 15 for 23 in the period. The Warriors, meanwhile, went 10 of 21 from the floor in the second quarter.

Notes: A moment of silence was held before the national anthem for the daughter of Rockets coach Kevin McHale, who died Saturday at age 23. ... The Warriors are 5-2 at home. ... The Warriors won the season series with the Nuggets (2-1) in last season's lockout-shortened season for the first time since 2004-05. The teams play once more, on Jan. 13. ... 49ers WR Michael Crabtree sat courtside in an all-black get-up complete with dark shades.

Visualized Qualcomm's patent wall

Just like how a rock star would hang all of his or her vinyl records on the wall, Qualcomm has a dedicated "Patent Wall" at its San Diego headquarters to show off 1,395 of its patent files. But that's just a fraction of the 13,000-something patents owned by the company, of course. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos of Paul Jacobs' pool of gold coins behind that wall.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A young model was either insane, or a calculating, quick-thinking murderer who feigned mental illness when he killed and castrated his lover, a prominent Portuguese journalist, in their New York hotel room last year, a jury heard on Wednesday. No one disputes that Renato Seabra, 22, killed Carlos Castro, 65, in January 2011. Seabra pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a charge of second degree murder, and his trial reached closing arguments at Manhattan criminal court. ...

5 Healthy Meats in Your Diet | Pittsburgh Fitness

Post image for 5 Healthy Meats in Your Diet

So you might be asking yourself ?Are there any healthy meats out there?? We meat lovers are happy to know that yes, there are. So you don?t have to feel guilty about your meat cravings and now you can embrace them instead. No one?s claiming that you have to eat meat every day, but meat does contain amino acids that help keep your body healthy.

There are really good, regularly available choices of meats that are high in protein and low in fat. You can do much better than just slicing off the fat from the ends of the meat that you eat too. Choosing and preparing the right kinds of meat goes a long way towards being and eating healthier. Here are 5 meats that you can add to your diet and not feel bad about it.

Pork

Pork is ?the other white meat? and is a healthy alternative to red meat. Pork is a better protein source than most forms of beef and is comparable to turkey in terms of fat-to-lean-meat ratio. A typical pork chop, with the fat cut off, contains about 0.3 oz (8 g) of fat. Pork chops can be relatively lean, but they?re typically not as low-fat as chicken or fish. By contrast, however, a USDA, University of Wisconsin and Maryland study found that a 3 oz (85 g) serving of pork tenderloin contains 0.105 oz (2.98 g) of fat and that the same portion of skinless chicken breast contains 0.106 oz (3.03 g) of fat.

Chicken

We all know that white meat is much better for you than red ? that?s a well-known fact. Chicken is a great source of protein and, as an added bonus; it?s less expensive than beef. Boneless skinless chicken breasts have only 116 calories and 3.2 grams of fat. It can be marinated, dry rubbed or even put on the BBQ, also boiled or broiled. There are well over 100 different ways to prepare and cook chicken. It tends to take on other flavors well, but should not be marinated for too long. Even marinating chicken for half an hour will give you added flavor.

Turkey

Turkey is generally a white meat (turkey breast), but it packs more flavor than chicken, and its dark meat can be pretty gamy. Turkey meat is also relatively low in fat: one 4.9 oz (140 g) serving of skinless roasted turkey contains about 0.25 oz (7 g) of fat. Turkey meat often contains more protein and calories per gram than chicken does but is higher in saturated fat. Turkey is particularly high in tryptophan, an amino acid that induces sleepiness. Free-ranging poultry is considered much healthier than poultry from large commercial farms, because of the different diet, natural growing conditions and less use of hormones. Also eating the cartilage at the end of drumsticks and wings is an excellent source of hyaluronic acid. If you didn?t know what hyaluronic acid is, well it works by acting as a cushion and lubricant in the joints and other tissues. In addition, it might affect the way the body responds to injury.

Oily Fish

Some examples of oily fish include salmon, trout, sardines and anchovies. These types of fish have oil in their tissues and around their gut. Their lean fillets contain up to 30% oil, specifically, omega-3 fatty acids. These oils are known to provide health benefits for the heart, as well as to the nervous system. People who eat lots of fish are less likely to develop colon cancer than those who don?t. Also oily fish are also known to provide benefits for patients with inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. Oily fish also contain vitamins A and D.

Buffalo (Bison)

Bison, or buffalo, meat is rich in nutrients such as zinc and iron. It generally contains fewer calories, less fat and lower levels of cholesterol than beef, chicken and pork. No matter how good white meat can taste, it will never truly satisfy the hankering we have for red meat. Buffalo, however, can. It?s probably the reddest meat you?ll ever see and unlike beef, it?s pretty good for you. A hunk of buffalo has far less fat than steak does and buffalo are generally grass-fed, which means a healthier meat.

Also if you want to compare that to a regular burger, your typical lean hamburger (10% fat) contains about 0.32 oz (9 g) of fat. Buffalo burgers, on the other hand, contain less than half that, about 0.14 oz (4 g).

ANALYSIS: Judgment day looms for Rupert Murdoch

Facundo Arrizabalaga / EPA, file

News analysis

LONDON -- Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, CNN anchor Piers Morgan and the entire British newspaper industry are braced for their very own judgment day.

Thursday will see the publication of a report by a major U.K. inquiry into the phone-hacking scandal. It will likely be one of the most important days in the history of the country's newspapers.

Early reports suggest that the findings will be ?excoriating.? In the language of the British tabloid press, the U.K.?s journalists are set to get ?a bloody good kicking.?

Led by a judge, Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry was set up after journalists, mostly from the now-closed News of the World, were accused of listening to people?s cell-phone messages to gain stories. The paper ? owned by Murdoch?s News Corporation -- even allegedly ?hacked? the voicemail of a murdered schoolgirl.

News Corporation ? home of Fox News, the National Geographic Channel, 20th Century Fox, and a host of newspapers -- appears to be back on its feet, recently buying into the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network.

But if Lord Justice Leveson chooses to launch a high-profile attack on the Murdoch?s business practices then the multinational media giant could find itself facing another round of bad publicity.

Prosecutors have filed criminal charges against former News of the World editor Andy Coulson and former News International executive Rebekah Brooks for their alleged involvement in Britain's phone-hacking scandal. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from London.

UK PM's ex-aide, Murdoch protege face charges in phone-hacking scandal

What the Leveson inquiry looked at included what Murdoch?s son James, who was then head of News Corporation?s British newspaper arm, did and didn?t know about phone hacking. It went on to question the Murdochs? relations with British politicians.

It even asked whether the political support of Murdoch newspapers had been leveraged to gain commercial advantage for the Murdochs? television networks. Rupert Murdoch told the inquiry that such a suggestion was unfair ? he had ?never asked a prime minister for anything,? he said.?

Morgan will also be looking anxiously across the Atlantic to see what the Leveson inquiry concludes.

At the end of his evidence in December, Morgan, who was once editor of the News of the World and then the rival Mirror, said he felt like a rock star ?confronted with a back catalog of all his worst hits.?

?He made no fatal admission, but the cumulative effect of shifty denials and self-contradictions was awful,? wrote British commentator Michael White in the Guardian, the newspaper which uncovered the phone-hacking scandal.

Former UK PM accuses Murdoch of misleading inquiry into phone-hack scandal

But what matters now is what Leveson has to say. Morgan and the Murdochs await the judge?s verdict.

The British media will concentrate on the proposals for regulation of the newspaper industry.

Dave Hogan / Getty Images, file

Piers Morgan, former editor of the Mirror newspaper, and Rebekah Brooks, ex-editor of the Sun.

But during the inquiry there was one issue that Lord Justice Leveson himself called ?the elephant in the room? -- the Internet.

Rupert Murdoch not 'a fit person' to run major company, UK lawmakers say

While the inquiry was still collecting evidence, two stories emerged that suggest Britain is no longer the home of the worst excesses of tabloid journalism.

First, U.S.-based website TMZ published pictures of Prince Harry cavorting naked with girls in a Las Vegas hotel room. Then a French magazine printed topless photographs of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, which were taken with a long lens while she was on holiday.

Prince William, Kate 'hugely saddened' by publication of topless photos

The pictures could be seen by anyone with a computer. And neither was reproduced by a British newspaper, except for News Corporation tabloid The Sun, which published the Harry snaps after days of consideration.?

Cameras are swarming Prince Harry once again, as he steps out for the first time since his Las Vegas photo scandal, but this time they are catching him doing good works, visiting sick children and appearing at the Paralympics. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Little wonder that The Economist described the Internet as ?A naked challenge to Lord Leveson.?

The Internet is awash with stories about the duchess, many of which are entirely speculative or plain wrong.

Clearly criminal wrongdoing by journalists will continue to be investigated. Charges against a list of Murdoch journalists await a court hearing. But when it comes to regulation -- Leveson?s main focus -- the Internet poses a challenge.

If Leveson ignores it and regulates British newspapers alone, he may shackle them to an increasingly insignificant existence amid falling sales. But if he proposes shutting down websites, he could be accused of trying to introduce China-style censorship laws.

Many will view it as a battle for the future of free speech in Britain.

Writing a Will | CTWorkingMoms

Nov 27, 2012 by Kris-Ann

You know how there?s always something you know you should get to, but you never do? It nags at you every once in a while, but it just never seems like the right time. There?s always an excuse.

Working out. Vacuuming under the couch. Cleaning out the freezer. Writing a will. Updating the baby book.

Hold the phone?writing a will? That?s not something people put off. That?s something you do at the very least as soon as you have kids, right? Well wrong. My husband and I don?t have a will (or wills?are we each supposed to have one?). Either way, I know it?s time to put something together. It has nothing to do with our finances, because Lord knows those are sparse. It has everything to do with our boys. Who would they live with if something happened to both me and my husband? That?s the question that?s been holding us up.

We purchased a Writing Wills for Dummies book or computer software, I can?t remember which one now. But because we have Max, one of those ?insert name here? type of will making aids just doesn?t fit for us. Sure, he?s ok now, but we have no idea what his future holds. We don?t know if he?ll go to college or be able to live on his own. We just don?t know how to plan for him. I know the same can be said for any child; what if they are in an accident, or get sick, but at least we kind of have a head start when planning for Max?s future.

I say we have a head start, but I actually have no idea where to start. I know there are such things as Special Needs Trusts and lawyers and advocates who can help. I guess I just need to go out and find one. If anyone knows one, please let me know.

That being said, if you?re in the southern portion of the state, and find yourself in a similar situation as me, there is someone who can help. Lawrence W. Berliner is a Special Education and Disability Lawyer based out of Westport and Guilford, CT. His firm is hosting several workshops in the area focusing on helping parents of a child with special needs. Along with other experts from the special needs community, his goal is to educate parents on Special Education rights, insurance issues (primarily in relation to the Autism Spectrum), financial planning and legislative issues. If you are interested in learning more about these workshops, held on December 3, 4 and 5, visit Attorney Berliner?s website and check out the Events column along the righthand side. Please note that these workshops do require an RSVP, so plan accordingly. They sound very informative. I just wish they were closer to me in central CT.

Christmas tree arrives at US Capitol

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. Capitol's Christmas tree has arrived.

The 65-foot tree comes from the White River National Forest in Colorado. It will be decorated with approximately 5,000 ornaments and will be lit by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, during a ceremony on Dec. 4.

First lady Michele Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia last week greeted the arrival of the Christmas tree that will be displayed in the Blue Room of the White House. The 19-foot tree arrived Friday by horse-drawn carriage.

Breast Cancer Screening Benefits | BlackDoctor

A businesswoman smiling as she looks out a windowOprah?s recent breast cancer scare serves as a reminder that women need to be vigilant in being screened for breast cancer.

READ: Oprah?s Breast Cancer Scare

Breast-cancer screening saves lives even though it also picks up cases in some women that would never have caused them a problem, according to a review published in The Lancet medical journal.

The independent review, commissioned by the charity Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Britain?s Department of Health, follows fierce international debate about the benefits of routine screening and recent research that has argued it does more harm than good.

?This has become an area of high controversy,? said Sir Mike Richards, the Department of Health?s National Cancer Director and one of the sponsors of the review.

Critics of routine screening argue that women can be subjected to unnecessary surgery, radiotherapy and medication to treat cancers that would have posed them no risk.

Harpal Kumar, chief executive of CRUK, acknowledged the shortcomings of screening but argued that until testing for breast cancer becomes more sophisticated, regular monitoring is the best option.

?Screening remains one of the best ways to spot the very early signs of breast cancer, at a stage when treatment is most likely to be successful,? he said.

?Yet, as the review shows, some cancers will be diagnosed and treated that would never have caused any harm.?

A panel of experts led by University College London professor Sir Michael Marmot concluded that screening prevents about 1,300 deaths per year in Britain but can also lead to about 4,000 women having treatment for a condition that would never have troubled them.

UN climate talks open in Qatar

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? U.N. talks on a new climate pact resumed Monday in oil and gas-rich Qatar, where negotiators from nearly 200 countries will discuss fighting global warming and helping poor nations adapt to it.

The two-decade-old talks have not fulfilled their main purpose: reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists say are warming the planet.

Attempts to create a new climate treaty failed in Copenhagen three years ago but countries agreed last year to try again, giving themselves a deadline of 2015 to adopt a new treaty.

A host of issues need to be resolved by then, including how to spread the burden of emissions cuts between rich and poor countries. That's unlikely to be decided in the two-week talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, where negotiators will focus on extending the Kyoto Protocol, an emissions deal for industrialized countries, and trying to raise billions of dollars to help developing countries adapt to a shifting climate.

"We all realize why we are here, why we keep coming back year and after year," said South Africa Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who led last year's talks in Durban, South Africa. "We owe it to our people, the global citizenry. We owe it to our children to give them a safer future than what they are currently facing."

The U.N. process is often criticized, even ridiculed, both by climate activists who say the talks are too slow, and by those who challenge the scientific near-consensus that the global temperature rise is at least partly caused by human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil.

The concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, according to a U.N. report released last week. The report also showed that there is a growig gap between what governments are doing to curb emissions and what needs to be done to protect the world from potentially dangerous levels of warming.

The goal of the U.N. talks is to keep the global temperature rise under 2 degrees C (3.6 F), compared to pre-industrial times.

But efforts taken so far to rein in emissions, reduce deforestation and promote clean technology are not getting the job done. A recent projection by the World Bank showed temperatures are expected to increase by up to 4 degrees C (7.2 F) by 2100.

"Climate change is no longer some distant threat for the future, but is with us today," said Greenpeace climate campaigner Martin Kaiser, who was also at the Doha talks. "At the end of a year that has seen the impacts of climate change devastate homes and families around the world, the need for action is obvious and urgent."

Dangerous warming effects could include flooding of coastal cities and island nations, disruptions to agriculture and drinking water, the spread of diseases and the extinction of species.

Many scientists also say that extreme weather events, such as Hurricane Sandy's onslaught on the U.S. East Coast, will become more frequent as the Earth warms, although it is impossible to attribute any individual event to climate change.

The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, is the most important climate agreement reached in the U.N. process so far. It expires this year, so negotiators in Doha will try to extend it as a stopgap measure until a wider deal can be reached.

The problem is that only the European Union and a handful of other countries ? that together are behind less than 15 percent of global emissions ? are willing to put down emissions targets for a second commitment period of Kyoto.

The U.S. rejected Kyoto because it didn't impose any binding commitments on major developing countries such as India and China, which is now the world's No. 1 carbon emitter. The U.S. and other Western countries insist that the firewall in the climate talks between developing and developed countries must be removed so that the new treaty can apply to all nations.

China and other developing countries want to maintain a clear division, saying climate change is mainly a legacy of Western industrialization and that their own emissions must be allowed to grow as their economies expand, lifting millions of people out of poverty.

That discord scuttled attempts to forge a climate deal in Copenhagen in 2009 and risks a relapse in Doha as talks begin on a new global deal that is supposed to be adopted in 2015 and implemented in 2020.

The rich-poor divide is also deepened by arguments over climate aid meant to help developing countries convert to cleaner energy sources and adapt their infrastructure to rising sea levels and other effects of global warming.

Alarming 15-fold increase in inflatable bouncer-related injuries among children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A new study by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital examined pediatric injuries associated with inflatable bouncers, such as bounce houses and moonwalks. Researchers found that from 1995 to 2010 there was a 15-fold increase in the number of inflatable bouncer-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments among children younger than 18 years of age. In 2010 alone, more than 30 children per day, or about one child every 45 minutes, were treated in hospital emergency departments for injuries associated with inflatable bouncers.

The study, available online November 26, 2012 and published in the December 2012 print issue of Pediatrics, found that while fractures (28 percent) and strains or sprains (27 percent) were the most common types of injuries, approximately 1 in 5 injuries (19 percent) were to the head and neck, demonstrating that use of these products can pose serious risks. Falls (43 percent) were the most common cause of injury followed by stunts and collisions. The majority of the injuries occurred either in a recreational setting (44 percent) or at home (38 percent).

"The findings from this study show that there has been an alarming increase in the number of injuries from inflatable bouncers," said Gary A. Smith, MD, DrPH director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "It is time for us to take action to prevent these injuries. Ensuring that parents are aware of the potential risks, improving surveillance of the injuries, developing national safety guidelines and improving bouncer design are the first steps."

The study authors point out that the injury patterns for inflatable bouncers and trampolines are very similar, and although there are national safety guidelines for trampoline use, no such guidelines exist for inflatable bouncers.

"The medical and public health community has yet to provide recommendations on the safe use of inflatable bouncers," said Dr. Smith, also a professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "The growing epidemic of inflatable bouncer injuries make it clear that it is time to do so."

Until national safety guidelines are in place, parents should consider the risks before allowing their child to use an inflatable bouncer. If parents allow their child to use an inflatable bouncer, they should consider limiting use to children 6 years of age and older, requiring that an adult be present to supervise while the bouncer is in use and allowing only one child on the bouncer at a time. If more than one child will be on the bouncer at the same time, the children should be approximately of the same age and size.

This is the first study to use a nationally representative sample to examine injuries associated with inflatable bouncer-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments. Data for this study were obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), which is operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The NEISS provides information on consumer product-related and sports and recreation-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments across the country.

Low Calorie Meals On A Budget

Food has constantly been a central part of any celebration. With that in mind, how are we suppose to drop weight with very small calorie, lower weight, or no body fat, and no carb diet, and appreciate ourselves, although watching everyone around us eat cake?

Bodyweight loss may be difficult, yet we are bombarded day-to-day with ads about how effortless it would be to lose pounds, should you just adhere to their software or purchase their item. If it was as quick as buying a item, then there could well be no excess weight issues in any respect.

I?ve personally watched two buddies, lose and obtain weight 4 times in the final calendar year. Through the end from the year, they were the same bodyweight as once they started, and they had been miserable throughout the entire time, as well as picking up every single cold and flu.

What will be the position of operating towards that killer human body should you feel miserable, weak and sick?

If you are seriously overweight, and it has impacted your health to the position of an emergency, then stick to your doctor?s guidelines. But in case you are like me, and needed to shed a few kilos, or in my event 25 weight, then there are methods to tweak your routines to assist with your pounds loss.

In that same year, that my two close friends lost and gained pounds with their extremely minimal calorie, minimal fat, no carb diet programs, I lost 26 weight, and actually didn?t feel it in any respect. Now they are asking me how I did it!

In case you don?t desire to quit any of the favorite foods, then try adjusting the size a lttle bit. I do not mean cut it in half or anything at all, but attempt placing it over a smaller plate. Have you noticed how big the restaurant plates are now?. . Have a glass of drinking water just before you consume, and which will take away that urge for seconds.

A pound is 3500 calories from fat. In the event you adjust your working day by approximately 250 calories, which will give you a excess weight reduction of one pound every single two weeks. That may well not sound like significantly, but it adds up quickly. When you just cannot get rid of 250 calories, then do a couple of walks around the home, although you happen to be yakking on the telephone, or do some stretches or methods during commercial breaks on Television, walk your dog. Try to burn 100 calories with a little of workout, and then you definitely only need to obtain rid of 150 calories inside your meals, which can be definitely just a minor tweak, could possibly be 1000 as basic as dropping 1 soft drink for h2o..

By trimming a little right here and a little there in your meals, you are able to quickly find 150 calories.. No, this is not a blast the weight in 7 days diet plan, no, this is a slow and constant excess weight loss that you are likely to carry on with, it can be not actually a diet plan by any means and that is the stage!

Honest Graft

The book Honest Graft gives us a glimpse into the mind of outspoken, early twentieth century politician George Washington Plunkitt and his views on the pressing issues of the time through his speeches. While few politicians would dare to air their personal observations in public, Plunkitt was blissfully unconcerned with the morally ambiguous nature of his unique opinions, which were delivered as sermons to the masses.

It would be reasonable to assert that there was no issue that Plunkitt felt more strongly about than the act of committing graft. In the book, Plunkitt discerns between two forms of graft: honest graft and dishonest graft. Both forms are illustrated with examples. Plunkitt claims to have never committed dishonest graft in his life but is reasonably proud of his achievements through honest graft on which he states, "I seen my opportunities and I took 'em". The acts which he associates with honest graft include: the usage of information about government developmental works and purchasing property vital to it to sell at a higher price, the sharing of said information with friends and the raising of government salaries.Whereas dishonest graft involved blackmailing criminals and the embezzlement of money from the city treasury. In my personal opinion, the act of graft cannot be justified under modern ethical or legal definitions as acts that Plunkitt considers honest would be considered highly illegal and immoral in modern society.

Plunkitt's position on alcohol consumption is unequivocal and uncomplicated, while he does not believe that liquor should be outlawed he is of the firm belief that politicians cannot e successful if they drink. According to Plunkit, "no matter how well you learn to play the political game, you won't make a lastin' success of it if you're a drinkin' man." (RIORDON, Chapter 19). He substantiates his assertion by giving the example of one of his lieutenants who was a highly capable individual that would require supervision during election time due to his drinking sprees. He further presents the examples of successful Tammany leaders and heads of department that tended to largely abstain from alcohol consumption.

Another issue which seems to incite Plunkitt's passions is the role of party bosses in the primary elections. Plunkitt felt that strong political leadership was required to conduct tumultuous events such as election primaries, without which government would descend into anarchy with various bodies and office bearers being at loggerheads with each other. He felt that this situation would be extremely detrimental to the interests of the city and presented the example of previous administrations without party bosses where: "the heads of departments were at odds all the time with each other, and the Mayor was at odds with the lot of them. They spent so much time in arguin' and makin' grandstand play, that the interests of the city were forgotten." (RIORDON, Chapter 20). He compares this with Tammanny administrations where party bosses were present and exercised control: "Then see how beautiful a Tammany city government runs, with a so-called boss directin' the whole shootin' match! The machinery moves so noiseless that you wouldn't think there was any. If there's any differences of opinion the Tammany leader settles them quietly and his orders go every time." (RIORDON, Chapter 20). Therefore, Plunkitt felt that the presence of party bosses was necessary, in order, to ensure the smooth operation of the political machinery.

The patriotism of Tammanny and its leaders left a deep and indelible mark on Plunkitt's psyche, causing him to proclaim "TAMMANY's the most patriotic organization on earth," (RIORDON, Chapter 17). He qualifies his statement by citing examples of the unwavering diligence with which they observe the 4th of July, Tammany's love of flags and its willingness to volunteer troops for war efforts, comparing Tamanny's behavior to that of rival organizations such as the Citizen's Union and the reformers whom he claims "run off to Newport or the Adirondacks to get out of the way of the noise and everything that reminds them of the glorious day." (RIORDON, Chapter 17). While one isn't given explicit reason to doubt Tamanny's patriotism or love of country, the rationale presented by Plunkitt seems rather superficial and has the potential to be perceived as tongue in cheek by many. Excluding their supposed commitment to war efforts, the majority of acts presented as evidence of patriotism seem artificial and rehearsed, rather than exhibiting any real devotion towards country.

Plunkitt's feelings about the reform movements of the mid to late 1800's and their attempted entry into the political culture were derisive and dismissive and considered their failure to be a direct result of the nature of individuals in these movements that were reformers and not politicians. Plunkitt considered politicians to be individuals that were involved in politics their entire lives and devoted the vast majority of their waking hours to learning the intricacies of the vocation "You have to give nearly all your time and attention to it. Of course, you may have some business or occupation on the side, but the great business of your life must be politics if you want to succeed in it." (RIORDON, Chapter 4). The inability of several reformers to absorb the political culture around them and to adapt and evolve was identified by Plunkitt as the primary reason why reformers were unable to have a lasting impact on politics and many prominent reformers of their times faded away into obscurity for this very reason, while individuals within these movements with political savvy managed to forge long and successful careers

UK energy deal triples renewable subsidy by 2020

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will triple subsidies for low-carbon power generation by 2020 after its coalition government this week forged a compromise over how to fund wind farms without harming the future of gas-fired power.

The compromise became possible after the government agreed to postpone until 2016 setting a target for decarbonisation, which was opposed by many members of Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party. The target is the extent to which carbon emissions are to be reduced by 2030.

The deal is expected to boost the share of renewables in Britain's energy mix to 30 percent by 2020, outpacing European Union targets of 20 percent, and create thousands of new jobs.

"Today we've reached a landmark agreement on energy policy that's going to deliver a clear, durable signal to investors," Cameron's spokeswoman said.

Under the agreed Levy Control Framework, spending on renewable power generation will increase to 7.6 billion pounds a year in real terms by 2020, from the current 2.35 billion pounds, to reduce dependence on gas.

The renewable spending plans will be funded through further rises in household energy bills, which are increasingly unaffordable for many consumers.

Responding to criticism from the British media, Cameron's spokeswoman said the shift toward renewable energy was not the main contributor to higher energy bills, which she said was due to high gas prices and infrastructure investment.

"While the proportion of people's bills will slightly increase in terms of the green aspects, actually when it comes to 2020, the net impact will be that people's bills will fall," she added.

Others were less convinced.

"The proposals are very negative for consumers," Liberium Capital, a London-based investment bank said.

"At face value a 7.5 billion pounds nominal rise in low carbon support could equate to an 80 pounds (20 percent) per household bill increase," it said.

Renewable spending will be focused on rewarding low-carbon power producers like renewables, nuclear and fossil fuel plants fitted with carbon capture and storage technology, a Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) spokesman said.

Divisions over spending plans between energy minister Ed Davey and Chancellor George Osborne have delayed key agreements over energy policy at a time of painful austerity measures introduced by the government.

NEW JOBS, INVESTMENT

The new agreement paves the way for the introduction of the Electricity Market Reform (EMR) Bill next week.

Industry group RenewableUK said the plans would create tens of thousands of jobs, bring forward at least 40 billion pounds of private sector investment and allow for a massive expansion of the UK's renewable energy sector.

"The government needs to maintain this momentum in the forthcoming Energy Bill (or EMR)," Renewable UK's Chief Executive Maria McCaffrey said.

"Those investors put 2.5 billion pounds into the industry this year - this will now increase exponentially," she added.

The extra investment announced on Friday will see renewables' share of the energy mix rise from 11 percent now, driven primarily by the 31 gigawatts of wind energy to be installed by 2020.

The spending increase will also help to support new nuclear power and the commercial use of untested carbon capture and storage technologies, the government said.

"This is a durable agreement across the coalition (government), against which companies can invest and support jobs and our economic recovery," Davey said in a statement.

However, environmental group WWF said the postponement in setting a decarbonisation target represented a failure of leadership.

"Having a 2030 decarbonisation target is nothing that Mr Cameron's government should be afraid of, given that it is a key requirement to deliver the legally binding Climate Change Act commitments, which Mr Cameron played such a key part in delivering," WWF's David Nussbaum said.

Nussbaum added that engineering companies such as Spain's Gamesa and Germany's Siemens, who want to invest in the UK's renewable supply chain, need clear long-term government commitments before entering the market.

GAS OPPORTUNITIES

Reforms are required to attract the 110 billion pounds of low-carbon energy investment that the government says is needed to replace ageing electricity plants fuelled by gas, coal and nuclear, up to a fifth of which face retirement this decade.

However, the EMR bill could be a boon for the gas industry.

"EMR is obviously focused on low carbon, but today's announcements give as much to gas-fired generation as to renewables and nuclear," said Ben Stansfield, senior associate specialising in energy at law firm Clifford Chance.

The government on Friday committed to establishing a system whereby backup power plants, mainly gas-fired, are paid to be ready to fill supply gaps created when the wind does not blow or demand rises during peak time.

Auctions for backup power plant operators will start in 2014 to provide backup capacity in 2018/19, the government said.

Three UK to carry LG Nexus 4

Android Central

British mobile operator Three has confirmed that it'll carry the LG Nexus 4, in a video on its official YouTube channel. One of the first UK networks to carry the Galaxy Nexus, Three lost out to O2 this time around, as an exclusivity deal has meant other UK networks have so far been unable to offer the phone for sale directly.

Three's also trumpeting the Nexus 4's 42Mbps DC-HSDPA capabilities, which its network supports. There's no information on availability or pricing just yet, but as O2's exclusivity deal reportedly lasts just a month, we should see the Nexus 4 in Three stores sooner rather than later.

(AP) ? The International Criminal Court unsealed an indictment Thursday against former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo's wife on charges including murder, rape and persecution. It was the first time in the court's 10-year history it has charged a woman.

The world's first permanent war crimes tribunal said the arrest warrant was issued on Feb. 29 for former first lady Simone Gbagbo for crimes against humanity.

Her husband, Laurent Gbagbo, is already in custody at the court's detention unit in The Hague facing similar charges stemming from his fight to retain power after losing a 2010 presidential election. If his wife is extradited, they could face justice together in an unprecedented husband-wife trial.

But a senior member of Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara's government, who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media, said Ivory Coast has already informed the ICC that the nation will not let her go.

"We informed them of this a long time ago," he said.

Ivory Coast officials are holding the 63 year old under house arrest in the northwest town of Odienne. Last week, Ivorian prosecutor Noel Dje Enrike Yahau said lawyers had questioned Simone Gbagbo there for two days and that the domestic charges against her remained the same: genocide, blood crimes and economic crimes.

Unsealing the ICC arrest warrant issued nearly nine months ago appears to be a tactic by the court to put pressure on Ouattara's administration to hand over Ms. Gbagbo.

The court said in the warrant that there is evidence pro-Gbagbo forces deliberately attacked perceived supporters of Ouattara in the aftermath of the election.

Judges who reviewed evidence supporting the charges against Ms. Gbagbo said they found "there are reasonable grounds to believe that Ms. Gbagbo bears individual criminal responsibility for the crimes ... as 'an indirect co-perpetrator.'"

The warrant called Gbagbo an "alter ego for her husband" with the power to make state decisions. It said there is evidence to suggest she "instructed the pro-Gbagbo forces to commit crimes against individuals who posed a threat to her husband's power."

Her husband was the first former head of state to be taken into custody by the court when he was extradited to The Hague by the Ivory Coast government last year.

Prosecutors say about 3,000 people died in violence by both sides after Gbagbo refused to concede defeat following the election. Ouattara finally took power in April 2011 with the help of French and U.N. forces.

Ivory Coast is not a member state of the court, but has voluntarily accepted its jurisdiction.

It is very rare for a woman to be charged by an international war crimes court. In the past, the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal convicted former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic of persecution and sentenced her to 11 years imprisonment.

The announcement of the arrest warrant and Ivory Coast's refusal to hand over Gbagbo appeared likely to raise tensions between supporters of her husband and those who back Ouattara.

Moussa Toure Zeguen, a leader of the Gbagbo allies in exile in Ghana, said by phone from Accra that the former president's supporters had no faith in the Ivorian authorities to give Simone Gbagbo a fair trial.

"We don't trust them. The only thing that Ouattara is doing is revenge," Zeguen said. "He wants to try us without trying any of the fighters from his side who also committed crimes. It is not fair, and this cannot bring reconciliation."

Top Tips For Web Page Hosting Users And Providers | Website ...

Finding the right web host for your website can seem impossible at times, but this is often just a case of not having the right information. The more you inform yourself about web hosting services, the smarter your decisions will be. These tips can help you out.

Control Panel

TIPS! Cheap web hosts are often more trouble than they?re worth. While you?ll no doubt be tempted by their low prices, you should also realize that they often translate to low quality services.

Ask about the server access that the company provides. Server access can range from a complex FTP-based type to a simple control panel that is web based. The easier HTML control panel is preferred for simpler sites, while more complicated sites may do better with FTP.

Find out how good your host?s reputation is. There are some web hosts that have great reputations, and these are the ones that you can trust to host your site. Read online reviews to ascertain which ones are the most highly recommended. Companies that don?t provide good service should be identifiable online based on reviews.

Make sure to find out about frequency of downtime from your potential host. The time of day and frequency with which they perform maintenance needs to be factored into your decision. If the service is down more than a single day per month or during your busy hours, start looking for a different hosting service.

TIPS! Register any domain names you wish to use at an accredited registrar, not through your web host. You want to ensure you always retain control of the domain name.

If you are confident you will use the same reliable web host service for a couple years, you should look into discounted rates. You could save a good deal of money this way.

Be aware of the many scams and hidden fees. Many hosts will show low prices on their plan advertisements, but they never tell you about the fees you?ll have tacked on top of that price. To combat this, know exactly what you are looking for in a web host and which features are crucial. You should select a plan that includes all the features you need to avoid being charged extra fees.

As you shop for prospective website hosting services, it is in your best interest to go with a company that is headquartered in your target audience?s country. If you target people in the U.K., make sure your hosting company also has a data center there.

TIPS! Web hosting services often charge you based on the type of traffic you receive. Find out if your host will bill you a flat rate plus overage for greater traffic, or if they bill you in steps.

Free web hosting services are usually not as good as they look. Although free website hosting providers can be useful, if you are running a business website, it is important that you use a professional web page hosting provider. Free hosts tend to place ads that you can?t control on your site. When a site has several different advertisements displayed all over it, the site might just become an annoyance. This will often mean that visitors leave as quickly as they have arrived, and never return again.

Web Host

Be sure to have a variety of ways to contact your web host when a problem occurs. Good customer service from a web host offers you accessibility to help 24/7, with multiple ways of getting in touch with them such as by email, phone support, or live chat. This will be a lifesaver should anything go wrong.

TIPS! A guarantee of your money back is one thing you should look for in a web host. If you become dissatisfied with the service within 30 days of signing up, you should have the right to cancel your service and have your money returned to you.

When registering a domain name through a hosting company, make sure this provider offers the most popular forms of payment. Payment methods such as PayPal ensure that you receive notification every time the web hosting provider charges you.

In conclusion, it is does not need to be hard when looking for a web host. With just a few key points in mind, you can find a good match without putting too much time into your search. Follow the advice provided in this article, and you should be capable of quickly obtaining a high quality web page hosting service for your website.

The Online Slime-Fest

In the early months of 2009, I spent many hundreds of hours inside the hulking Widener Library, working on my doctoral dissertation and pausing periodically to look at the snow outside blanketing the Harvard campus and ponder the future. ?I probably had a successful academic career ahead of me, if I wanted it. ?The pathos and the seasons of academic life appealed to me. ?But I also yearned for adventure, and my primary interest was in the public square and not the ivory tower. ?I loathed the poor quality of religious conversation online, and wanted very much to evangelicals to set higher standards of discourse.

So when I received an email from another doctoral student (David Charles) who was engaged in building Patheos.com, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. ?I believed in the vision as a whole: We would work together to recreate online the religious marketplace of ideas and yet to make it better: more informed, more charitable, more elevated. ?But I also had a vision for the Evangelical Channel, over which I became the managing editor: to model the kind of intelligent and yet winsome, rigorous and yet gracious conversation evangelicals and really everyone should engage in.

On days like today, I?m reminded how audacious that goal is, how hard one has to swim against the currents, and how many people would prefer that we fail.

As I?ve said before, the new media world incentivizes caricature and exaggeration, slander and suspicion. ?It disincentivizes deliberate thoughtfulness, patient contemplation, measured and balanced analysis. ?Many of the largest blogs grow around a central organizing animus. ?Write about how much you scorn liberals or conservatives, Christians or Muslims or Catholics or Mormons, atheists or theists, complementarians or egalitarians, and you?ll attract an audience eager to have their prejudices confirmed. ?The convenient thing is: since you will all?know?who the bad guys are, and since you all possess such stunning insight into their psychology, you can dispense with the usual standards of evidence and argumentation. ?Why bother questioning the evidence when their guilt is unquestionable?

I awoke this morning with the intention of criticizing a website called Talk2Action.org for promoting scorn, suspicion and misunderstanding of conservative Christians. ?But that?s not what I got into this business to do. ?Instead, I?m going to respond (with as much grace as I can muster) to the co-founder?s criticisms of me and my recent interview with Samuel Rodriguez, since I am in full possession of the facts in this case.

I?m not terribly concerned with defending my reputation. ?The accusation here is not the worst I?ve heard, from the Left or the Right, it comes at a relatively small blog/website, and no one who knows me would give this particular yarn much credence. ?But I do think it?s an illuminating case study of the kinds of problems we all face when we try to hold a charitable conversation over matters on which we passionately disagree.

According to Frederick Clarkson, co-founder of Talk2Action, conservative Christian culture-war extremist wingnuts like myself faced a problem. ?A blogger named Greg Metzger ?had had the temerity to write critically about the protean Christian Right leader, Rev. Samuel Rodriguez at the very moment when Rodriguez was being?hailed?as the Great Hispanic Hope for the Republican Party.? ?Oh no! ?A blogger (!) ? who owns his own blog?(!) ? and writes too at another small blog called?Talk2Action?(!) ? wrote something critical about Samuel Rodriguez. ?Clearly this constitutes an emergency. ?Serious measures are called for. ?What are Christian supremacist wackos like us to do?!

Apparently, ?one Timothy Dalrymple? (that would be me) conspired with Samuel Rodriguez in a ?tag team effort? to ?intimidate, discredit and ultimately silence? Greg Metzger. ?Because Patheos is engaged in ?unhinged boosterism? on behalf of Rodriguez, I arranged this interview with Rodriguez for the express purpose of beating up on Metzger. ?You could really tell that I was coming loaded for bear, Clarkson says, because I referred to Rodriguez?s critics as his ?detractors.? ?Whoa, now! ?Take it easy, Dalrymple, there are children listening! ?Apparently, Clarkson views ?critics? as the proper neutral term (neutral, like, you know, ?unhinged?), whereas calling someone a detractor?well, you might as well be calling him a Nazi. ?Or something.

I co-conspired in this tag-team sliming, apparently, because I?m friends with Rodriguez and I want to silence our mutual enemy, Greg Metzger. ?It was all a set-up for Rodriguez to accuse Metzger of being anti-Charismatic and anti-Latino.

Thus saith Frederick Clarkson. ?Frederick Clarkson, who has absolutely no idea what he?s talking about.

Here?s what?actually?happened. ?Back in the real world, Greg Metzger is a friend of mine. ?And in the real world, criticisms published at Talk2Action really do not evoke a great deal of anxiety. ?I know we all like to have an exaggerated sense of our own importance, but notes and comments I?ve gotten that Rodriguez was somehow rendered ?desperate? by a few blog posts are just silly. ?Also, in the real world, I like Samuel Rodriguez, but I?m just getting to know him. ?There was no emergency, no conspiracy, no intent to slime.

I value Greg Metzger for many reasons, but one is because I believe he?s earnest about acting rightly and speaking truly. ?He?s brought several noteworthy stories to my attention; he calls me now and then for affable conversations; and I often find points of agreement in what he writes. ?I published a lovely piece Greg wrote in which he?spoke of a hardening sense of opposition?to Samuel Rodriguez that softened after he actually interviewed Rodriguez and got some answers to his questions. ?We explored ebook and blogging options (his blog was more wide-ranging in its topics at the time). ?I also?helped him promote?the very worthy cause of?Ryan Boyette, who has been reporting heroically on the bombing of Christian villagers in Sudan.

Unfortunately, Greg has found the continuous stream of Samuel Rodriguez criticism coming out of Talk2Action convincing, while I have not. ?Greg decided he was wrong to have been duped by the interview with Rodriguez, and has become a regular detractor (I mean ?critic? ? pardon my language!). ?I?ve often wondered whether any answer would satisfy Greg that Samuel is not the nefarious person he imagines him to be, but is an earnest (albeit imperfect) brother in Christ who tries to build targeted political coalitions to advocate on issues important to Hispanic evangelicals. ?So when Samuel Rodriguez found himself in the news again, due to the GOP?s terrible proportion of the Hispanic vote, I reached out to arrange an interview on (1) Hispanics and conservatives and (2) Rodriguez?s responses to critics. ?I even asked Greg to suggest some questions, because I wanted to know what questions Greg considered the most important.

So I conducted the interview. ?Greg and the crew behind Talk2Action have accused Rodriguez of being an Islamophobe, a dominionist ?Christian supremacist,? a homophobe, and the kind of opportunistic huckster who says one thing to this audience and another thing to that audience. ?(But thank goodness they didn?t call him a ?detractor? because that would have been truly beyond the pale!) ?In the interview, I mentioned what seemed like the more persuasive charges and gave Rodriguez a chance to respond. ?The response as a whole was reasonable, I thought, but it included a little counter-attack:??one of the individuals behind the articles you mention ? and I say this without any hesitation ? has a very discriminating, very bigoted anti-Pentecostal, and in my opinion anti-Latino, presentation. ?Looking at other articles this individual has written, he explicitly went after the Pentecostal/Charismatic community and tarnished the group as a bunch of lunatics.?

It wasn?t entirely clear to me whether Rodriguez was referring to Greg himself (I?ve never seen Greg write anything I would describe in those terms) or to another of the men behind the attacks emanating from Talk2Action. ?But let?s assume he was referring to Greg. ?Should I have pushed back and demanded specifics? ?Perhaps. ?But I wasn?t sure that I would publish that part of the interview; an interviewee is rarely going to be able to provide you with specific quotations or titles or links from memory; no one who knows Greg is going to accept that he?s prejudiced, and people who don?t know Greg won?t even keep track of whom Rodriguez is talking about; and I didn?t want the interview side-tracked into interpersonal issues. ?Should I have refused to publish that part of his answer? ?Perhaps. ?If I had done so, however, it would have been to protect Samuel Rodriguez, not to protect Greg Metzger. ?People rarely come off well when they make personal allegations like that; the accused typically comes off better than the accuser. ?So, ironically, in my ?unhinged boosterism,? I chose not to protect Rodriguez. ?He said what he said, and he?s a big boy, so he could defend it if he wished.

When I interviewed Jim Wallis years ago, and he attacked the integrity of World Magazine?s Marvin Olasky, I published it, even though Marvin?s a friend. ?Marvin didn?t complain; as he understood, I was just reporting what Wallis had said. ?Marvin simply responded to the accusation, and the accusation ended up hurting Wallis a lot worse than it hurt Marvin. ?I figured with Greg, as I did with Marvin, I would simply follow up the interview with a later post. ?Because while I agree with much of what Rodriguez has to say in other portions of the interview, and I think much of the paranoia at places like Talk2Action about ?dominionism? and the New Apostolic Reformation (of which many legitimate criticisms can be made) does seem informed by a general anti-Charismatic stereotype, I?ve never seen Greg personally publish anything I would characterize as anti-Charismatic or anti-Latino.

I did, in the comments after the interview was posted, criticize Talk2Action, and I suspect that has a good deal to do with Frederick Clarkson?s response.

But Clarkson could not even get the details right. ?He links to the first part of the interview but calls it an ?introduction? to the interview; he gets my work title wrong; the second part of the interview was never featured on the front page of Patheos. ?He offers a ludicrously wrong-headed interpretation of Rodriguez?s comments on abortion (Rodriguez was suggesting that some people on the Left criticize him because he is pro-life, not that all prochoicers are ?venomous, intolerant, bigoted, cancerous and intolerant? (sic) or that Christians cannot be prochoice; he was not even claiming that Greg Metzger specifically is prochoice).

But Clarkson?s post is all too typical of Talk2Action. ?There?s the conspiratorial anxiety, suggesting that Rodriguez and I are in cahoots, when I actually know Metzger much better and was consulting with him on which questions might allay his suspicions. ?There?s the gob-smacking obliviousness of a website whose entire purpose is to attack conservative Christians suggesting that Patheos is engaged in ?unhinged boosterism? because I published on my blog what a Christian leader actually said. ?There?s no real research, because research implies an openness to questioning your own presuppositions. ?In spite of the blazing irony of Talk2Action complaining about a ?sliming,? there?s no self-examination, no questioning of whether it?s true that they?ve dealt in anti-Charismatic stereotypes. ?There?s really not even a decent effort to get the facts right ? because a decent effort would have meant picking up the phone and calling me or calling Rodriguez. ?Yet Talk2Action never actually speaks to the people they regularly slime. ?Instead, a couple of facts are strung together with a bunch of presuppositions and misinterpretations, all based on a presupposed slate of the good guys and the bad guys and a preconceived template of what motivates the conspiratorial actions of the Christian Right and the good and noble deeds of those who hold them to account.

I don?t have any more indignation for this kind of thing. ?It?s just sad. ?It?s sad that online conversation on matters of religion so quickly becomes a veritable circus of scorn and suspicion. ?It?s sad that organizations like Talk2Action, which actually raise legitimate concerns from time to time, undermine their own purpose by letting their hostility get the better of them. ?It?s sad that extremists never recognize their own extremism, and sad that people like Samuel Rodriguez who buck the mold and try to work with both sides of the aisle all too often become the subject of unrelenting witch-hunts from the purist-partisans on either side.

Samuel Rodriguez may not get everything right, but he?s a good man. ?So is Greg Metzger. ?I can only mourn that we live in a fallen world that breathes out enmity, that sows the seeds of confusion and suspicion, and would rather see Christians up in arms against each other than joining arms in common cause.
