The Muppet Movie: An All-Time Summer Classic

They've done just what they set out to do

They?ve done just what they set out to do

Summer movies usually demand a great suspension of disbelief. They?re heavy on special effects and deal with outlandish situations, whether superheroes and sci-fi or wacky gross-out extreme comedy.

There is, perhaps, no greater suspension of disbelief than a green felt frog somehow convincing you of its dreams.

The Muppets have been around since 1955 and have survived through several TV series and films, web shorts, record albums, books, DVDs, comic books, action figures, plush toys, and a theme park attraction. In 1979?s The Muppet Movie, the Muppets realized their full potential. The Muppet Movie allowed Jim Henson?s unique blend of emotional punch, endearing characters, and ludicrous humor to find its greatest expression.

It?s nothing if not ambitious. We open with the Muppets in a movie theater, preparing to watch the flick they?ve just completed about their own origins. In other words, a classic film-within-a-film. Right off the bat, we know we?re not dealing with your typical kids movie.

Kermit T. Frog (Henson) is an amphibian with a simple dream: To entertain. He heads off to Hollywood in pursuit of that dream. Along the way, he meets all of the classic Muppet characters: Fozzie Bear (Frank Oz), the frustrated comedian whose loyalty to Kermit is unstoppable; Gonzo the Great (Dave Golez), a crazy daredevil always searching for his next thrill; and of course Miss Piggy (Oz again), an irrepressible diva with an unrequited love for Kermit.

As they make their way to California, the group is menaced by Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), the crazy owner of a restaurant chain specializing in frog?s legs. He wants Kermit for obvious reasons. As you might expect, Kermit and the gang defeat Doc Hopper, they make it to Hollywood, and Orson Welles (as Lew Lord, a powerful studio exec) orders his secretary to ?draw up the standard rich and famous contract for Kermit and his friends.? Then we get a musical finale in which the Muppets start to film a film about their lives, within a film about their lives that?s presented as a film they filmed about their lives. It?s a film within a film within a film. Good grief, a running gag.

The Muppet Movie gave these googly-eyed felt creations a soul. It?s there in the opening moments, that unforgettable long pan downward from the clouds to Kermit on a log, plucking out the opening notes to ?Rainbow Connection? on his banjo. Who can see that and not immediately identify with Kermit, holding an impossible dream close to his little froggie heart?

In that moment, we know we?re dealing with something special. We?ll get the Muppet zaniness we?ve come to expect, but there?s a (dare I say it?) reality that arises from moving the Muppet action outside a soundstage. That reality allows The Muppet Movie to get away with plenty of savvy moviemaking tricks. Kermit talks straight to the camera; stars waltz onto the screen in cameos where their true identities are just barely concealed. There?s a self-awareness, and enough of a self-awareness to realize that there?s self-awareness. That?s what gets the Muppets around the bend past irony and toward an astonishing warmth. That warmth makes it possible to slow the plot to a magical stillness with a song in the desert, where Gonzo explains, ?I?m going to go back there someday.?

That?s probably my favorite moment in the movie, although ?Rainbow Connection? is of course classic. I like the Gonzo sequence better because it?s such a perfect moment of revealing character; there?s a boldness to it, that they would cease all the action just to let this weird creature share his heart. Find me any movie, family flick or otherwise, that values its characters so much that it will slow itself down just to let you get to know one of them better.

It?s Henson and his Muppet crew at the peak of their powers. Gonzo the Great could have spent the entire run of the Muppets being a one-joke castoff, the puppet equivalent of Kramer from Seinfeld. Instead, we actually learn what this strange being is about. We get to know him, and we start to truly care about him.

I always get a warm fuzzy when Kermit sings about how his dream is something that he?s supposed to be. We should all be so lucky to experience that feeling, whether it comes when you find what you?re meant to spend your life doing, or when you meet the person you?re meant to spend your life with. It?s a certainty of purpose, an absolute belief in the power of dreams to make us all better people?or frogs, or pigs, or whatever Gonzo is. It?s a special feeling, and it?s special that The Muppet Movie can help us feel it.

Nuance Dragon Notes brings quick, spoken memos and messages to Windows 8

Nuance Dragon Notes for Windows 8 lets us speak our memos

Sometimes, the smallest and simplest apps make the most sense. Take Nuance's new Dragon Notes for Windows 8, for example. Unlike its NaturallySpeaking cousin, it's not a universal tool: instead, it's narrowly focused on the voice dictation of memos, email, social networking updates and web searches. That limited scope leads to a very simple interface, however, and slims down the price from $100 to a far more accessible $20. Fans of minimalism can grab Dragon Notes directly from Nuance on May 15th, although they'll need to spend $10 for every language they speak beyond English.

<strong>"NCIS: LA," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: Viewers love their "NCIS," in any form. The ratings have been strong and the network is producing a backdoor spinoff pilot for this spinoff show. A full night of "NCIS" could be in CBS's future.

  • "Partners"

<strong>"Partners," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Canceled <strong>Why</strong>: Low ratings and unfavorable reviews led to the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/partners-canceled-cbs_n_2145832.html">early demise</a> of this CBS comedy.

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: CBS always wanted another season of this bawdy hit, it was just a matter of getting its stars to sign back on. Though Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher will be back for a Season 11, the "half" man Angus T. Jones remains up in the air.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The show is enjoying life in syndication and its Season 4 numbers are better than most of its third season.

  • "Unforgettable"

<strong>"Unforgettable," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Uncanceled <strong>Why</strong>: CBS canceled the Poppy Montgomery drama last season ... and then revived it! Season 2 premieres Sunday, July 28.

  • "Vegas"

CCLT adds 3 board members - Inside Real Estate News

    Highlights:

    • 12-year-old Colorado Community Land Trust gets new board members.
    • CCLT looking to grow its portfolio of 188 homes.
    • New board members will help it expand.

Two leaders in affordable housing and a construction expert have joined the board of the non-profit Colorado Community Land Trust.

Joining the board are Jeff Martinez, Elizabeth Gundlach Neufeld and Dan Notartomaso

Ahead of Mother's Day, Obama rallies women around health law

President Barack Obama on Friday touted his health care law's benefits for women, whose response to the program the White House believes will be key to its success.

"Moms so often put themselves last," Obama said, who tied the event, held in the White House East Room, to Mother's Day. This is "particularly true when it comes to things like health care."

The event was to launch a campaign the White House is undertaking to spread information and get mothers to encourage their adult children to enroll in health care "exchanges."

There's "so much misinformation" surrounding the law, the president said on Friday, that "people may not have a sense of what the law actually does."

He noted that the 85 percent of people who already have insurance will not be affected by the program, officially known as the Affordable Care Act.

Hispanics and African-Americans will be major target groups for enrollment in the program, which is set to begin in October, a White House senior administration official said on Friday. But the White House believes young people are the single most important group for the success of the health care exchanges?where the noninsured can buy health insurance at competitive rates?which will be established by states and the federal government, the official said.

Stability for the program and the cost of insurance premiums is dependent upon young people: 2.7 million healthy 18- to 35-year-olds are not currently covered by insurance, according to the official. Participation by these young people will offset the higher costs of covering seniors. But the challenge is getting young and presumably healthy people to sign up.

That's where the White House says mothers come in: They'll be key to encouraging their sons and daughters to sign up, the official said.

The White House will conduct outreach at the local level, in part by using tools from the campaign trail, as well as relying on information disseminated by centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, hospitals, community health centers, local churches and community leaders, officials said.

Overall, the Congressional Budget Office projects 7 million enrollees in 2014.

Many Republicans have issued dire predictions about implementation of the law, and some Democrats have added their voices to those expressions of concern.

Obama conceded on Friday that there have been "mistakes and hiccups" already, and specifically identified the original release of a 21-page application as a misstep?one that received a widespread negative reaction. Obama said that the White House, which then released a three-page version, realized "we [could] do better than that."

The White House believes they'll have the upper hand in Republican attacks on Obamacare once people enroll. At that point, the official said, Republicans would look like they were trying to take health care insurance away from Americans.

In the meantime, Republicans are continuing their assault on the controversial program, with House Republicans planning a vote next week on whether to fully repeal the law.

?The president?s health care law is a train wreck for men and women alike, and that?s why a majority of Americans support Republican efforts to repeal it to protect their health care?and their jobs," House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement on Friday. "Next week, the House will act to repeal the law that is increasing health care costs, reducing access to quality health care, and making it harder for small businesses to hire workers. The entire law should be repealed so we can enact a step-by-step, common-sense approach to health care that starts with lowering costs and protecting American jobs.?

The vote in the House, however, is largely political theater.

Republicans have staged dozens of votes to repeal the law in whole or in part in the three years since the measure passed into law. Additionally, if a repeal measure did pass the Republican-controlled House, the Democratic-controlled Senate would kill the effort.

?It?s a blessing to have this opportunity chase a ring with two guys I know I came in with, Darnell Dockett and Larry Fitzgerald,? Dansby told SiriusXM NFL Radio.? ?Another opportunity to take a stab at it.?? It?s a once in a lifetime opportunity, I had to advantage of it just to take a shot at to be a legend, and try to get in that Ring of Honor.?

Dansby said he decided to return to Arizona after being cut by the Dolphins because ?[i]t?s comfortable, man.?

?I was already out here working out and training anyway,? Dansby said.? ?I still had the house out here.? I never sold it.? Family was here, just had another son.? It?s perfect timing, man.? Conn. man thought linked to heist gets 2? years

(AP) ? A reputed Connecticut mobster was sentenced Thursday to 2 1/2 years in prison in a weapons and prescription drugs case that revealed federal authorities' belief that he knew something about the largest property heist in U.S. history.

Robert Gentile, 76, of Manchester, pleaded guilty in November to illegally selling prescription drugs and possessing guns, silencers and ammunition. With credit for time already served and good behavior, Gentile is expected to be released from prison in 10 to 12 months. He then faces three months of home confinement, followed by three years of supervised released.

Prosecutors were seeking a prison term of 4 to 4? years. Gentile sought a sentence of prison time already served and wanted to be released on probation or home confinement. He has been detained since his arrest in February of last year.

Gentile spoke at the hearing, telling the judge he's been a hardworking man all of his life. He started talking about his wife, saying he loved her, before breaking down into tears.

The case made national news last year when prosecutors revealed that the FBI believed Gentile had information on the still-unsolved theft of art worth an estimated half-billion dollars from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990.

Two men posing as police officers stole 13 pieces of artwork including paintings by Rembrandt, Manet, Degas and Vermeer. FBI officials said earlier this year that they believe they know who stole the paintings but still don't know where the artwork is.

Gentile has denied knowing anything about the art heist and no one has been charged in the theft. But prosecutors revealed at the sentencing hearing that Gentile had taken a polygraph about the theft and claimed he didn't know where the stolen paintings were, which an expert concluded likely was a lie.

Federal agents said they found an arsenal of weapons at Gentile's home including several handguns, a shotgun, five silencers, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and homemade dynamite. Authorities also searched the property with ground-penetrating radar in what Gentile's lawyer called a veiled and unsuccessful attempt to find the stolen artwork.

Gentile and a co-defendant, Andrew Parente, were also charged with selling dozens of prescription drug pills including Dilaudid, Percoset and OxyContin. Parente also has pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced later this month.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham said at sentencing that Gentile had been recorded by an informant saying he had associated with reputed Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger and another mobster. He did not elaborate on those associations.

But Durham said earlier in court documents that Gentile has been identified by several people as a member of a Philadelphia crime family who has been involved in criminal activity for virtually his entire adult life.

Durham said a captain in the La Cosa Nostra, Robert Luisi, told authorities that Gentile had committed robberies and possibly other violent crimes and once planned to rob an armored car carrying money from a Connecticut casino. Luisi also said that Gentile once lived with him in Waltham, Mass., and Gentile was his body guard.

Gentile's lawyer, A. Ryan McGuigan, called Luisi's allegations "hearsay" and said the government has never proven any link between Gentile and organized crime. He also said Gentile's criminal record, before the current case, includes only old convictions for non-violent crimes.

McGuigan said Gentile is a family man and retired bricklayer, concrete mason and automobile dealership owner. He said Gentile's last conviction was for larceny in 1996 involving improper distribution of proceeds from his father's estate. Gentile's other convictions were in 1956, 1962 and 1963 for receiving stolen goods, carrying a deadly weapon in a motor vehicle and possession of illegal firearms, respectively, McGuigan said.

When he pleaded guilty in November, Gentile said he wanted to spare the state and himself the expense of a trial and hoped to get out of prison as soon as possible to be with his ailing wife. Both Gentile and his wife have heart problems and other ailments, according to court documents.

Maxthon Cloud Browser adds local network file transfers for Android and Windows

While many browsers sync through the cloud, few know how to cope with the local network -- what if we just want to push a file to another device nearby? Maxthon doesn't think we should have to resort to an online service or a dedicated app for the purpose, so it's rolling a LAN Transfer feature into its Cloud Browser. Starting with Android and Windows versions available today, the web client lets users shuttle files directly to others on the same network, with nothing but the browser in between. Both iOS and Mac users should join the party soon, which could turn Maxthon into a rare (and very unconventional) cross-platform file manager.

Nikkei hits five-year high; China data helps momentum

    By Tomo Uetake

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average hit its highest close in nearly five years on Wednesday as better-than-expected trade data from China boosted sentiment further after a record Wall Street finish overnight.

While stocks of firms focused on China were among the big gainers, concerns about Germany were also eased after the euro zone's powerhouse reported strong industrial orders.

The Nikkei advanced 0.7 percent to 14,285.69 after climbing as high as 14,421.38, its highest level since June 2008, extending the previous session's 3.6 percent rally that came after an extended holiday and recent upbeat U.S. jobs data.

"I had been telling my clients to buy into any coming dip but the problem so far has been that dip hasn't looked like coming," said Stefan Worrall, director of equity cash sales at Credit Suisse. "I'll almost be glad when it does."

Official data showed on Wednesday that China's exports and imports grew more than expected in April from a year ago, possibly easing some of the concerns about weakness in the recovery of the world's second-largest economy.

Komatsu Ltd gained 4.4 percent and industrial robot manufacturer Fanuc Corp advanced 3.6 percent as stocks with heavy exposure to China climbed.

Other notable gainers include Sharp Corp , which surged 6.3 percent after a newspaper reported that the consumer electronics maker would begin mass production of liquid crystal displays for the next model of Apple Inc's iPhone 5 in June.

The broader Topix index edged up 0.5 percent to 1,194.34, with 3.92 billion shares changing hands, compared to last month's average daily volume of 4.31 billion shares.

During the session, the index briefly surpassed the 1,200 points for the first time since September 2008.

    EARNINGS SEASON IN FULL SWING

Japanese corporate earnings as well as forecasts for the current fiscal year through March were also in focus on Wednesday.

Toshiba Corp fell 5 percent after the Nikkei said the leading chipmaker and supplier to Apple was likely to miss its own operating profit forecast by 23 percent for the fiscal year that ended in March.

After the close, the company said its operating profit had fallen 4.1 percent on the year to 194.3 billion yen, 25 percent less than its guidance of 260 billion yen.

Toyota Motor Corp , which also announced its full-year results after the market close, gained 1.4 percent.

The world's best-selling automaker almost quadrupled its operating profit to 1.32 trillion yen in the year ended March 31, beating market expectations of 1.26 trillion yen profit, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine's SmartEstimates, which places emphasis on top-rated analysts.

Of the 67 Nikkei companies that have posted quarterly results so far, 55 percent of them either beat or met market expectations, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine. That compared with 62 percent misses in the previous quarter.

"So far, the overall impression is that results seem to be good but forecasts are conservative," said Hiromichi Tamura, chief strategist at Nomura Securities. "But the momentum has been strong and investors expect further rises in the Japanese market."

Tamura, who predicts the Nikkei to touch 14,500 by June and 16,000 at the end of the year, said that the index's recent surge has not stopped investors from buying more stocks.

"Japanese stocks are cheap given companies' potential growth in their earnings mid-term even though forecasts are conservative at this point," he said.

In April, foreign investors snapped up Japanese stocks, with net buying at 2.68 trillion yen, the highest monthly level since July 1982 when the Tokyo Stock Exchange started keeping records.

The benchmark Nikkei has surged more than 65 percent since mid-November, when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe began promising expansionary monetary and fiscal policies to revive the economy during his election campaign.

Ways To Build And Boost SEO With Internet Marketing - Articlecell.com

Consider the ways you want to promote your site. Free or cheap methods to promote your business are to make a blog or use social networks to promote your business. There are a number of different ways to get visitors to check out your site. It just takes some creativity.

If you are considering writing about make money writing articles it is necessary to do your homework and get professional advice first. You want to do your online advertising on the most popular websites you can find. Consider it an investment that will get you a lot of valuable exposure and lead to brand recognition. Ensure that the page you use has considerable traffic.

If your site maintains the same format, incorporate an ever-changing blog. Making sure your site has updated content is a good way to move up in rankings. One easy way to have consistent fresh information is to add a blog.

One great tip is to always stay aware of the competition. You may easily look at the competition's web site to see the features they might have. Also, find out how much traffic they are seeing so you can compare it to your own site.

Advertise your company on popular websites online. Having your brand recognized can be a powerful way to increase your business success. A website that has a steady, high volume of traffic can expose your ads to a limitless number of people, every one of whom is a potential buyer.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products they'd like to see. Retain your site structure along with providing a variety of unique content.

Web marketing is the same as other advertisers, but could be dissimilar in other certain areas. As an example, the way search engines focus on title tags could be changed at any time. You may, for example, need to refocus your efforts on creating viral videos or other word-of-mouth content.

No internet marketing venture will succeed through luck alone, so remember that it always takes hard work and dedication. You can't find a large company who found "luck" and ended up being powerful and successful. Coca Cola's success isn't pure luck, but rather years of research and work that culminated in a wildly successful soft drink. No way! Marketing had a huge hand in their success.

With a solid plan for internet marketing, you can already tell which of your products make you the most money. A good strategy is to use your best sellers to drive sales of complimentary and add-on products. Advertise your big sellers and provide bridges to complementary products once you have sold your most popular product. Because these products relate to your top sellers, they do not need as much promotion as your other goods.

Tailor versions of your website to different audiences worldwide. This means that these different versions need to be in various languages. This will result in a larger, global audience. If customers can properly understand your site because the content is in their own language, it increases the chance that they will purchase items from you.

Offering several different payment options for customers will lead to more sales. While it may seem fine to only offer credit cards for a payment method, you should also let people pay via online payments like PayPal and their own bank accounts.

Expanding the range of options you offer for payment can help increase your business. It may seem acceptable to only accept credit cards, but it is smarter to allow people to use checking accounts and online systems like Paypal.

When shipping an order to a customer, be sure to include some type of free gift or sample, relative to the item sold. Many customers will look at the coupon as an added incentive for returning to the website for more purchases.

If you are seeking additional web traffic, look to improve on optimizing your site for the search engines by having a unique and original content. Any idea you have for a business is probably not original. You're selling the same stuff as someone else. So, separating yourself from the pack with originality becomes incredibly important for the life of your business. Just simply making sure that you're the one writing your own content could be enough to separate yourself from those other guys. Add your own unique touches where applicable.

When you are planning to write about make money writing articles it is important to do your research and make sure that you are using the correct strategies for your business. As mentioned earlier, Internet marketing provides a fantastic way to connect with potential customers. If you know about any of the techniques out there, you can alter these to meet your campaign's needs. Use the above information as a guide to help make your business a success.

Quick Glance on the Samsung Galaxy S4

Gesture-based feature lets you preview notifications and other info without waking up the phone

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most feature-laden phones we've ever used, and it's easy to overlook some stuff, especially if you don't go digging in menus. One neat but understated capability of Samsung's new high-ender is its ability to detect gestures at a distance using front-facing sensors, even while the device is sleeping. The GS4 takes advantage of this by introducing "Quick Glance," which lets you preview the time, date, notifications and other details without waking up the phone.

Part of the Air Gesture suite of features, Quick Glance can be activated by long-pressing "Air Gesture" in the quick settings pull-down and enabling it in the list that appears. That's also where you control other gesture features like Air jump, Air browse and Air call-accept. (Yeah, this thing's not short on gesture controls.)

Check out our quick video demo above, and subscribe to the Android Central YouTube channel for more awesome GS4 video content.

Porno or promo? 'SNL' host Galifianakis confused

    TV

Zach Galifianakis is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend and, although it's his third time taking on the gig, he is apparently still confused about what's required of him as host.

In the best clip, the "Hangover III" wears just a bathrobe, telling "SNL" star Jason Sudeikis he's come prepared to shoot the "pornos" for the show. When a confused Sudeikis informs him that he'll be shooting promos, not pornos, to spread the word of his appearance on the show, a disappointed Galifianakis opens his robe, asking Sudeikis, "How am I going to showcase this then?"

"You must have very small feet," Sudekis remarks of getting a gander of what's under the robe.

"I'm a ladies' size 6," Galifianakis replies proudly.

The full promo reel (above) features four "goof-about clips," all of which showcase Galifianakis' signature strange sense of humor. The last time Galifianakis took control of the "SNL" stage, he earned rave reviews from viewers and critics for his opening monologue, which featured a hilarious musical performance to the song "Tomorrow," while he danced around in Annie's trademark red dress, along with a pair of pink undies.

Will Galifianakis be able to top his previous "Saturday Night Live" hosting performances? If the promos are any indication of what to expect, viewers may be in for a treat -- and some tips on how to get a great Justin-Bieber-themed manicure.

The musical guest on Saturday is Of Monsters and Men.

First black Italian minister seeks cultural change

ROME (AP) ? Italy's first black Cabinet minister, targeted by racist slurs following her appointment last week, said Friday that Italians aren't racist but that some are merely ignorant of other cultures and the "richness" that immigration can bring.

Congolese-born surgeon Cecile Kyenge held a news conference to introduce herself to Italians so they could get to know her.

"I am not 'colored.' I am black. It's important to say that. I emphasize it proudly," she said.

Kyenge's appointment as integration minister had been hailed as a big step for Italy, which has only recently had to cope with waves of immigration and the resulting problems of integration into a largely homogeneous society.

But the move prompted racist taunts from xenophobic politicians and members of neo-fascist Internet groups ? a reaction so vile the government authorized its anti-discrimination office to investigate. (One European parliamentarian from the anti-immigrant Northern League party called her a member of a "bongo bongo government.")

One of her chief defenders, lower house speaker Laura Boldrini, told La Repubblica in an interview posted on its website Friday that she herself has been the target of death threats, which began after she stated publicly that Italy's laws about inciting racial hatred on the Internet should be tightened.

Boldrini showed the newspaper hundreds of printed pages containing the threats that she said showed "'sexist aggression" against her personally, and women in public office in general, ranging from the innocuous to the violent.

"I am not afraid to open a battle front, if necessary," Boldrini was quoted as saying. "Will we give visibility to a group of fanatics? Yes, it's true. But they are not a few, there are thousands and thousands. They are growing every day and they constitute a part of the country that we cannot ignore."

Kyenge, in her comments, thanked her defenders, but refrained from lashing out at her detractors. She stressed that Italy has a long tradition of welcoming foreigners and that that tradition must be appreciated anew and applied in daily life.

"In reality, Italy isn't a racist country," she told reporters. The problem, she said, is ignorance of the "other."

"We need to knock down these walls: Until you know the other, skepticism grows, discrimination grows," she said. "At this point, what is identified as racism has at its base not knowing other cultures. Because in reality, immigration is a richness. Diversity is a resource."

Kyenge, 48, was born in Congo and moved to Italy three decades ago to study medicine. An eye surgeon, she lives in Modena with her Italian husband and two children. She was active in local center-left politics before winning a seat in the lower Chamber of Deputies in February elections, and Premier Enrico Letta brought her into his coalition government last week.

"We hope she will start a new era for Italy, let's hope!" said Kaius Ikejezie, a Nigerian shopping at Rome's Piazza Vittorio market on Friday.

Kyenge has said her priority would be to work to make it easier for children born in Italy to immigrant parents to obtain Italian citizenship. Currently, such children can only apply when they are 18.

"We have people who are born and raised in Italy who don't have an identity," she said. "They don't feel Italian and they don't feel that they belong to their parents' homeland. We need to start from here."

She offered her own experience as an example of the discrimination that confronts non-Italians living here legally and able to contribute to society: Despite having finished at the top of her class in medical school, Kyenge said she couldn't get work in an Italian hospital for two years because she wasn't a citizen.

"I have always fought against any form of discrimination and racism," she said. But she is realistic too of the limitations of her office, the requirements for a "cultural change" and the precariousness of a government made up of longtime political rivals.

"It could be that today I leave the ministry unable to get any results," she said. "But I have to be able to put in place a basis for all those changes that are so longed-for, for all those dreams."

Unlike France, which has had two or more generations of immigrants and several ministers of African origin, Italy is a relative newcomer to immigration. Foreigners made up about 2 percent of Italy's population in 1990; currently the figure stands at 7.5 percent, according to official statistics bureau Istat.
