An audience of thousands sat in the July sun as country-tinged pop band The Leisure Society opened Latitude Festival?s main stage yesterday.
Gentle flute and violin strings supported two-part harmonies, with frontman Nick Hemming enjoying cheeky exchanges with the Obelisk Arena crowd.
He swore as he said how ?amazing? it was to be at Henham Park, as the mercury reached for the thirties. ?But that?s no reason to swear Nick,? quipped back a band-mate. ?This is Latitude, not Reading Festival.?
And the Burton on Trent-formed six-piece captured the atmosphere of the weekend as they worked through a set of uplifting tunes.
There was no craning to see over the tall person in front, as families staked out a good spot to sit and sip cold drinks. And the civilised approach to the British festival experience was echoed in the music.
With two Ivor Novello nominations to their name, musicianship was accomplished and choruses were soaring.
A ukulele was brought out mid-set, as a love song was dedicated to a festival-goer.
And Hemming?s song-writing shone through as tempos changed, electric guitar complemented woody flute and people were drawn in. Their bright, mature sound set the perfect tone for the rest of the weekend.
